The doghouse

Is it normal for a puppy to go absolutely berserk after a day with different people looking after them?

Please please tell me this is normal! Pup is 12 weeks old, we’ve had him for 2 weeks. I had to work 9-3 today so he’s had 6 hours with my parents. They’ve had him before but only for 2hours.

I’ve come home to a demon pup. He was absolutely frenzied, running laps of the garden, nipping (he nipped my crotch!) barking at the wind, peed all over the kitchen floor-twice. I fed him and put him in his pen with a chew-he went bonkers, barking and crashing against the door.

Took him out and sat him on a blanket on my knee. After some chewing of the blanket he’s crashed but he’s still wired-every little noise he’s startling awake.

The kids haven’t been fed, I’m still in my work clothes, kitchens covered in wee and mud.

Fuck my life 🤯

yep! This sounds like my puppy!! Good news is that after a couple of months this has settled a bit for me - so don't worry he will get into the routine. x

Don't 12 week old puppies have a tendency to go berserk generally.

Everything was different today so I imagine it's thrown him a bit and now he's all edgy and, as you say, wired.

Try to keep things around him as calm as possible, I know it's hard, and it will pass.

Dog's are funny creatures. My 8 year old dog does zoomies around the living room every single time we come home from a walk; you'd think we'd been away from home for months the way she gets so excited.

Ah, he's anxious! He thought he'd lost you forever! (Thank goodness she's come home!)
All that stress hormone needs to be run off.

I managed to pull it back together. Once pup was fast asleep I put him back in his pen where he slept for 2 hours! Managed to get changed and spend some time with the kids. Kitchens had a mop through and I cobbled together a supper for us all. DH is now home and having a lovely time with a calm and sleepy puppy curled up on his lap whilst I try to bring my blood pressure back down to normal.

we call this "mad dog in a circle" - we also found our dog does this after swimming or getting wet - maybe to get dry and warm up!

Definitely overtired, our puppy used to go like that when she was exhausted but didn’t know what to do with herself. She used to just colide from one naughty behaviour to the next 😂

I’d encourage your parents to enforce a nap time if they can in a crate or similar so you don’t get full on demon puppy!

We call this the zoomies...frequently happened when dog is away, has a hair cut,is wet, dirty, had a bath,we have gone out and come back....the list is quite endless! Our nearly 13 year old spaniel still has quite impressive zoomies!

@han01uk

I just knew you had a spaniel from the zoomies description. 2 cockers here!!

I think I wouldn’t mind if he was just being hyper/silly/running around it’s the biting that I find really difficult especially when he caught me on my crotch!

I’m learning though, I think next time it’ll be food, wee and straight onto my knee rather than trying to get him into his pen.

I told my parents they had to enforce nap time and I think they did try but he only had 30 mins this afternoon and I think the same in the morning. Like a pp said, it was all new to him.

Gosh I feel awful wishing time away but I do wish I could fast forward a year.

Our last dog was a terrier too, she was 5 when we got her. She never bit me once, she was the sweetest, gentlest thing. I really miss her 😥

That’s really good to hear, thank you! I’ll keep everything crossed that we find the same.
