Poorly puppy

Puppy woke us up at 4am making an awful noise. It sounded like he has something stuck in his throat. He made a wheezing sound followed by a hacking noise like he was trying to be sick. Took him outside and while hacking did a normal poo. He continued wheezing and hacking for about 10 minutes. He eventually settled down, and I took him back up to bed. He woke up as normal at 6am and seemed okay. Had a smaller bout of hacking when he went for a wee. He is now snoozing on my lap. His eyes have been a little gunky the last two mornings, so I cleaned them with cooled boiled water and then they were okay during the day. He has also been sneezing a bit. I noticed after his walk yesterday he was shivering. We got caught in a sudden downpour and got soaked. I dried him off, but then noticed he was shivering. He was bright in himself though, happy to play, eat etc. Does this sound like he has a cold? I’m about to see if he will have breakfast...

Poor little thing x could it be kennel cough? I looked it up and it sounds like it could be, it also mentioned discharge from eyes. Very easy to pick up and sounds a bit similar. Because he is a puppy might be worth getting him checked over by a vet just to be on the safe side. X hope he feels better soon x

Hacking does sound like kennel cough.

For puppies I would be calling the vet for advice.

With a puppy and those symptoms you need to get him checked by the vet.

Yeah vets this morning to get that checked out. Puppies can be absolutely fine or go downhill very quickly, so it’s best to err on the side of caution.

I just watched a video on YouTube of a dog with kennel cough, and he sounded exactly like at 4am 😞. I thought he was choking to death when I first woke up. Will call the vet to ask their advice.

Ahhh I am sure it will be ok. Get them to check him over, they might give him anti biotics because he is a puppy. Just read on the internet its best to take collar off as this can restrict the windpipe (especially if used with lead) whilst having kennel cough. Keep the house well ventilated and with some TLC I am sure he will recover soon xx

Thanks Talia, he wears a harness on walks. The only time we use a lead on his collar is when we take him to the toilet in the garden. I will either use his harness or just let him loose at the moment. As for TLC he will get bags of that. My boys have been fussing over him this morning x

Our puppy had similar symptoms a month or so ago. He started with very hungry eye and then slot of sneezing. The cough sounded like he was gasping for breath. Was really worried. Took him to vet. No temperature and chest was all clear. He also put his finger on his throat in a place that would trigger a cough if it was kennel cough and nothing. Vet said a virus and to go back if got worse. It didn’t get worse but took a few weeks to go completely.
Also we have another older dog who was fine. If it’s kennel cough it’s very contagious. But kennel cough usually gets better on it’s own.

Not hungry eye. Gungy eye.

That’s what his cough sounds like, Lazymum99. Awful sound. I’ve filmed him hacking to show the vet later this morning. I hope it’s not kennel cough as I guess that’ll mean he can’t go out for walks for ages. I’m just glad that he has done lots of socialisation already.

The vet couldn’t say for sure what’s wrong with him. Could be just a cold or kennel cough. If it lasts more than a few days it’s more likely to be kennel cough. No temperature and his lungs are clear. Lymph nodes are raised a bit. We can take him on walks but need to avoid other dogs just in case. Just need to make sure he doesn’t get too wet and cold. Probably best we stay in for the next couple of weeks then 🙄😂
I am a bit worried that he hasn’t been vaccinated properly. I took my book into be stamped because I forgot it when he had his booster. The vet said he could give the vaccination because his details were on the system. Now they are unsure as to what the vet gave him 🤨 It’s just as bad as having kids. Constantly worrying about things!

Constantly worrying about things! Welcome to the nexy 10+years of your life Grin
Its why dogs are so cute, to make up for the stress they put you through!

Neither a cold or kc is too much to worry about if the dog is otherwise healthy. Just a bit irritating for him (and you).

KC is like the flu, there is lots of different strains and you only get vaccinated for a few so no guarantee he wouldn't catch it.

He seems to be a bit better, thanks Talia. Slept through the night okay. Put a bowl of steaming water near his crate and used a towel as a barrier so he couldn’t stick his paw in. Think it helped a bit. He only coughs now when he gets hyped up and starts running about. Such a shame because he is full of beans but is a bit restricted with what he can do. Loves chasing his ball indoors but have to keep it to a minimum otherwise he starts hacking. Hopefully he will be back to full explosive power in a few days!
