My pup is still going on our rug if we don’t move fast enough. He doesn’t like being outside in the rain, and he is still so very young, and small, and shivery, and squeaks and whimpers at the back door so soppy here lets him in - for the sake of the neighbours, you see, and not at all because I’m cold and damp as well.

As FeedThemFlumps says, you need to get them outside LOTS:
As soon as they wake up
As they walk away from food/water bowl
As soon as a play/greeting session calms down
If they turn in a circle (Elfpup misses this stage, but all our other dogs circled prepee)
If their knees sag - move FAST!

The rug needs cleaning, ideally with something to eradicate the pee smell. It would be ideal if you could remove it for a week or so (hang it up to air in your garage/in your garden, if it ever stops raining) until the habit is broken and the pee smell (a cue to pee) is totally gone.

And just keep on with fulsome praise for peeing where you want, and ‘the disappointed voice’ at any accidents. (My Oscar is in the post )

you don't say. He's 5. And probably just a wee dick. He doesn't like the cold. It's a thicker pile rug. Normally asks but since it's got colder I think he just pisses if the mood takes him. Eg. Was sitting in room today and heard him pee. He'd asked to get out not 30mins before. There's no solution-it's random and he can be let out every 30 mins. Was thinking like peppermint or something magical.

It's not the lead thing. You'd be out every 30 mins on top of walks.

You really need to get rid of the rug, I was not joking. They are difficult to clean at the best of times, but I am not sure even an enzyme cleaner would be good enough for a shaggy rug simply because of how woolly it is. Also, if he dislikes the rain, wet and mud, the rug will always be a better alternative.

I assume you have spoken to your vet to rule out a UTI or similar just in case.

If he needs to pee every half an hour then he needs a vet check.
Take him out on the lead to toilet. Praise.
Don’t allow him access to the rug when unsupervised. That way he can’t pee on it.

Hi. Thanks for your replies. Yes I'm getting rid of the rug but hopeful to get another one as it's a stupidly large room and like a community hall without a rug. It's the new rug I'm hopeful for. There's no UTI's. He gets plenty walks and healthy. It's a personality/breed/ doesn't like the cold/ rain/ fog/ lingering bad habit from when he had separation anxiety as a puppy type thing rather than a medical thing. He's completely different to other dogs we've had. And this is his one albeit pissy bad habit.

Yep, they're not fans of wet/cold/scottish weather apparently. Which is annoying!

I hear you poisson. He's been checked by vet a few times. Im convinced it's a personality quirk which we were slow to understand because he's so unlike Labrador's.

Clean the spot he pees on properly with Simple Solution to get rid of the smell.

I bought black bathmats. My greyhound pees on these during the night. Nowhere else. Next morning change clean floor and into the wash. Saves my rug and floors.

Thanks. Will look at simple. I've binned then rug. It's rotten. Been considering something similar with bath mats olive. Only thing is I don't want him to totally lose the toilet training he does have in the winter. In meantime I've sprayed an old rug with lemon water #hopeful 😬

Wolfie. I can't take him out every 30 mins. I walk out with him when I can. It's good enough. This is what I'm left with. He's in no way a poor dog. He's a prince 😄.

No dog should need to pee every half an hour. Either there’s an underlying condition or he’s no actually needing a wee but is marking.
It’s not good enough to have him peeing in the house. It really isn’t.

Ultimately if you don't want him to pee inside you need to be totally on the ball and take him out whenever he shows signs of wanting to go.

If that means he's tethered to you in the house for several weeks, then so be it. Mine wasn't left unattended outside the kitchen until he was about six months old so he couldn't pee on the carpet on the soft furnishings. He never peed in the kitchen either thankfully but at least if he had done, it would have been much easier to clean!

As a puppy (we got him at 12 weeks) he was out every 15-20 minutes for the first month or so. We only ever had 4-5 accidents indoors.

Hasn’t the vet suggested a trial on incontinence medication for a dog that pees every 30 minutes?

If he is not exercised regularly he could be peeing because of stress. How many walks does he get and how varied are they?
