Puppy food

Hi,
We’re collecting our new puppy next week and still haven’t sorted out dog food. Have looked on allaboutdogfood.com but it’s all a bit baffling and I’m struggling to make a decision. Please can someone recommend a decent, not extortionate dog food for my new pup. We’re thinking dry food.

We've used Millie's Wolfheart for over a year now. Ddog loves it, looks great and has no more stinky wind.
They have a customer service team who you can call or web chat with who give excellent nutritional advice.

I would feed whatever the breeder gives you at first as it tends to be quite an upheaval for them without swopping foods straight away (plus then you know the puppy sloppy poos aren't food related ).

On the website I would look for high meat quantity and then you can compare price. Originally we fed millieswolfheart dry then wet as it's for both puppies and adults but my fussy dog went off it so we now feed other brands which are adult only.

Yes, continue to feed whatever your breeder has fed to reduce the already considerable stress on a new puppy. Stress can show in their guts (runny bums/gastro upsets) so familiar food reduces the risk.

Hopefully the breeder is feeding a high quality, stage & breed appropriate food but if you do want to change over, do it once the pup has settled in and do it very gradually.

Mine eats Barking Heads. Grain free, good quality protein, high % of meat, not full of crap fillers.

Assuming you are buying from a decent breeder, the puppy should come with a decent supply of the food it is used to.

So - check with your breeder how much food they send with the puppy. If they do not do this (tut tut), then ask them what they are feeding the litter and buy the same.

If the food being used isn't a decent brand, then make any changes gradually over a couple of weeks.

Lots of breeders give a little sample pack of the food to take home when you collect your puppy in their ‘puppy pack’ (along with certificates, contract, blanket/toy that smells like mum & siblings). Are you getting this, missbate?

Stick with what the breeder is feeding for the first few weeks while your pup settles, then you can switch to whatever you want - just make sure you do it very slowly!

I moved my pup food after a week as unfortunately the stuff the breeder was feeding wasn't great.

I now use Ci food. He loves it, and he's doing so well on it. Was going to look at Millie's Wolfheart but to be honest this is so good that I don't think I'll bother.

Autarky puppy & Junior. Decent food, not silly price. We add cooked chicken few times a week for extra protein.

I’ve tried the white fish and potato kibble which I got from our local indie pet shop. It makes puppy stink of fish but she has a lovely glossy coat!

I recommend Canagan dry. Not cheap but excellent and suitable for all ages. However, I did move my pup onto it gradually as his breeder had sent him home with a very different quality food but one that he was used to.

Do you buy Millie's wolfhart online? My local pet shop doesn't sell it.

With my puppy I started with the same food he was weaned on but introduced some soft food as well (butchers puppy) he much prefers the soft food. I'm still looking for the perfect kibble!
