Dog constantly licks around mil

Firstly dog has no skin issues or allergies. My MIL is round a lot and my dog always sits with her when she comes round. My dog will happily lick herself non stop from the moment she comes til the moment she goes. It drives me absolutely insane I hate it. She never does it round me as I tell her no straight away. I definitely have misophonia around dog licking. I don't mind the sound of her chewing or drinking just the licking makes me want to tear my hair out. I tell her no when mil is here but she doesn't listen and i would be constantly telling her. I think it's behavioural? Its also making me dread MIL coming round. We've had her about 1 year from a elderly family member who could no longer look after her. She has never been 'taught who's boss' so is not the best behaved dog, but she's getting old. Any experiences and anyone find dog licking worse than nails on a chalkboard?

She's doing it now after telling her no 7 times and it's making me regret ever taking her in. She's driving me up the dog damn wall 😡

I don't think telling them 'no' makes much of a difference if you just say 'no'.

Perhaps when she starts licking you put her on the floor each time so she starts to associate licking means not sitting with MIL.

What does your MIL think? Does she like it and therefore won't help stop it or does she tolerate it and will help you?

I have tried putting her on the floor or outside, or covering her paws that she excessively licks with my hands, she growls and soon as I take my hand away she continues, if I put her down she will come back and continue to do it and mil doesn't mind what so ever and will happily allow her to do it for hours, even though I've told her how unbearable it is to me. I've took myself away upstairs now as I've had enough but even still knowing she's doing it is making my skin crawl.

Dogs lick In this incessant manner either because they are in pain Or because they are stressed. Could she have arthritis or another reason to be in pain? It’s very odd that she only does it around MIL. What is MIL like around the dog, is she worried or scared, or doesn’t like dogs? Something about your MiL might be stressing your dog. Is your MIL unwell, on any medication, use a perfume or something else that could explain this?

P.S. dogs don’t need to know who is boss. If you want to stop her from licking just reward her when she is not licking at associate a command word with it.

I've mentioned it to the vets twice there's no health problems and she won't do it when there's just me as I stop it right away. MIL loves dogs and my dog loves her she used to look after her a lot when dog was with elder family member but doesn't really fuss over her like my OH does so I'm not sure if it's attention seeking/behavioural. MIL let's her lick her feet etc aswell which pushes me over the edge 🤮🤮

This may be completely off the mark and I don’t want to worry you but sometimes dogs display this kind of worried/loving behaviour around people who are sick. Is there any chance your MIL is unwell?

@Booboostwo there's no signs or symptoms of her being unwell she's got pretty good health and very active, in her mid 50's

Can you put your dog in another room and close the door when your MIL is over? If your MIL really wants to spend time with the dog in the same room as you, she needs to stop the dog licking given how awful it’s making you feel when when you’re not in the room.
