The doghouse

I lost my dog tonight

I can't quite believe it. She was 12, she's had spinal pain for years and lately the drugs she's been on long term just weren't cutting it. She's been so uncomfortable, getting very little restful sleep as she's up and down all night growling to herself, and in the last week she started doing it (jumping up in pain, pacing and growling) in the mornings as well as in the night.

I'd given her as much pain relief as I had available tonight then topped it off with tramadol, but she just couldn't sit or lie comfortably at all. DH and I have argued so often about when it would be time, as these issues have been around for a long time, but suddenly we just agreed that she'd had enough.

Vet had to give her 2 shots of sedative as she was super aggressive to the end, but she finally fell asleep in my arms with me and DH telling her that she was our best girl.

I feel absolutely wretched. Sorry if I don't comment for a while, I needed to write this out.

I'm so sorry for your loss, it's the hardest but kindest thing we have to do for the ones we love

Take comfort in the joy you had together and that he is no longer in pain

Sending you as much strength, love and as many cuddles as you need. Saying goodbye is so hard, but take comfort in knowing you gave her the best life, the love and care she deserved.

I can't cry anymore, my eyes are so sore. She's only been gone 4 hours. I've got her harness in bed with me.

It's so hard to know when it's the right time. I'm so sorry for your loss, she's at peace now and she's not in any pain. She was obviously very much loved. Flowers

I'm so terribly sorry for your loss.

You did the bravest and kindest thing for her, she's free from pain and drifted off knowing she was loved.

Please take care of yourself, I know how hard this time will be. I hope you manage to get some sleep tonight.

So sorry for your loss. Ultimately you did the kindness thing and at least she's not suffering now. Animals give you so much joy but it's the hardest decision letting them go. You did the right thing and hopefully this will give you some comfort eventually. Have been through this myself. Flowers

I'm so sorry. Flowers

We had to let our girl go last February and we still miss her sorely.

My ds (15) had a big old cry only yesterday saying he wanted to pet her one more time and tell her she really WAS the best girl.

We got a little house dog (our other was a lab and she loved to run through the fields and follow ds about) and she's nothing like our previous dog, but she has helped to heal a little.

We were all there to say goodbye to our lab too, she knew she was adored and idolised as I am sure yours did too Star

That is exactly what I'm feeling Newschapter, like I want just another day or even an hour with her again to touch her and hold her and smell her and tell her how much I adored her. I think she knew, I hope she felt it as she drifted off.

My DH says he's never felt anything like this. It's the first time losing a pet for both of us, she was our first dog and an absolute nightmare (health and behaviour wise) for all of her 12 years. She was very special and although she was not a nice tempered dog, she had her moments alone with us.

I just miss her so much, my chest aches.

We had to have our darling lab put to sleep just after Christmas a few years ago. She had terrible arthritis (she was a rescue and came from a puppy farm Sad) and the vet was amazed we got her as far as two days past her 13th birthday.

She was the gentlest soul, asked for nothing other than our love and I still miss her now. I think I cried non stop for 4 days, DH was starting to worry he admitted later. I have her ashes in a lovely wood carved box with her massive collar inside (she was a chunky girl).

I don't think you should have a dog unless you love them unconditionally - flaws and all. We now have 2 spaniels and I make the most of every single day with them - their lives are too too short.

It does get better honest, and I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers

I’m so sorry, it hurts so much..I had to finally say goodbye to my darling little boy, a Yorkie, three months ago. He’d had cancer for two years & been doing so well, after being given just weeks to live at diagnoses, that my vet was amazed. But his last weekend it became bad & I couldn’t let him suffer with it after being such a happy little boy. I cried fir weeks & still do, often at inconvenient times when Im out. I’ve still got his ashes in the cardboard box he came from the vet in the sitting room. I want to put them in something nicer but haven’t yet been able to face opening the box to do it.
