Unvaccinated puppy holiday

I have a long weekend planned in a cottage and cant decide if I should take my puppy. He will have had his vaccinations the monday before but the vet said he cant go on the floor till the Monday we come back. What is the risk of bringing him with me? I have a plan for him if he cant come, but I would miss him. There is a confined garden but I dont know the risk of letting him out there to toilet as anyone could have let the place. Any advice?

I would cancel TBH. I wouldn’t want to leave a pup I had only just brought home. And no I wouldn’t take a pup to a rental. I think Parvo is the one that can live for months.

Your dog will be absolutely fine! The vets love to scare

Your dog will still have it’s mother’s antibodies which means it’ll be protected. I’ve never vaccinated any of my dogs and they’ve never rolled over and died Hmm

I wouldn't take him as I made the mistake of going to a dog friendly place once and the enclosed garden was still full of lots of poo from other dogs that had stayed and not been cleared up. Up to you on the risk of taking him but that experience put me off dog friendly cottages.

I also wouldn't leave a puppy I had just got at home to go on holiday as we specifically made sure we didn't have any planned until he was much older.

It's totally up to you though as others would either risk it or leave them at home.

So you are planning on putting him on the floor 2 days before the vet recommends? The Saturday instead of the Monday?

I doubt he will be at risk

Hi Jouska, I hadn't planned on putting him down outside except the enclosed garden. But biteysharks comments on dog mess has made me think it's likely too much of a risk just to make my in laws happy. I did think about putting puppy pads down first but for 2 days for a family event doesn't seem worth it. Thanks for the advice guys.

You surely can't take a small puppy to a rental anyway. Even if its dog friendly they are generally anticipating older house trained dogs, not puppies who will pee and poop on the floor and chew things.

So the vaccines kick in at exactly a week - that is just not how vaccines work.

He will not be at any more risk than any vaccinated dog.

Agree with kjhkj that you will have other things to worry about Smile

We took our pup away to Scotland a week after she came home at 9 weeks, I talked to my vet and he said it was fine, pup survived and loved spending time at the beach 🙂
