The doghouse

My dog did the oddest thing today

My dog is not keen on the vacuum cleaner, he's not scared of it exactly but when my cleaner is here he will generally go into his crate and ignore it while she's vacuuming.

If I'm here then I'm usually in the study and he 'protects' me from it, as she approaches down the hallway he gets up to stand between me and the door and if she gets too close to me then he'll go for the sucky end of the hose (technical term). So usually my cleaner pauses outside the study and I go off and make a cup or tea or something and the dog will follow me.

Today when he heard her coming down the hall he got up and pulled his bed up against the (inwardly opening) door and then lay down again. My cleaner couldn't get in and he wouldn't get off the bed at my command so I had to drag the bed away from the door. Then I went off to the kitchen and he followed me.

I don't know whether to be impressed or not, he's pretty slow of thinking so there's a good chance that it was just coincidence that he moved his bed. On the other hand he's 8 yo so he's had a while to come up with strategies and while he's not a quick thinker he does sometimes figure things out.

Now he's done it once, he probably won't forget!

Today, we went to a park we don't often go to, in a different part of town. When we tried to turn back, he very deliberately turned left instead, on a path to another exit. He seemed very determined about it, so we let him lead us out along a road, to a main road and along that .... at this point, I realised it looked vaguely familiar... he then turned into a street which I realised lead to a house he'd stayed in a couple of times several years ago via Holidays4Dogs when his usual 'Aunty' couldn't have him.Grin

I'll have to make sure that the door is wedged wide open whenever the cleaner and I are both here at the same time then. It's surprisingly awkward to drag a bed with a 19kg dog on it. Grin

I don't know what it is about the vacuum cleaner that bothers him. He doesn't mind noise, we just had a whole load of fireworks (illegal here but you wouldn't know it by the volume of them) go off close by and he didn't even twitch an ear.

Mine doesn't much like the vacuum cleaner either, but doesn't care at all about fireworks/thunderstorms/shotguns (shooting in nearby fields). And he's pretty deaf now anyway. Maybe it's vibrations, or the airflow doing something to scents they object to.

It might be something like that, there is a sort of dust smell that comes from it. Although he completely ignores the horror of DS's farts so perhaps more the vibrations than the smell.
