Reputable breeders don't let pups go on 24th December, do they...?

As it says in the title. I've researched and found what appears to be a very established, reputable KC assured breeder. Mum, dad, grandmothers, aunts and uncles all live with the breeder and can be met with the pup. No alarm bells...apart from the fact the pups can be collected on 24th December No decent breeder would allow this, surely? Or am I being naive?

We got ours in early January at 13 weeks. Breeder was very specific that she was not coming to us as a Christmas present. We would not have taken her in any case. January suited us perfectly.

@Wildorchidz That's exactly my thoughts. I've removed myself from the wait list for this litter / breeder. I just can't take a puppy from a breeder that would let them go at Christmas rather than hang on to them for a couple of weeks.

Because dogs in dogs' homes (please, we're not in the US) usually have an unknown history and therefore most reputable dogs' homes will not rehome them to families with children.

When you get a dog from a breeder you are getting a puppy that will grow up with the family, and you will know its parentage. You aren't going to end up with a puppy of unknown heritage that will grow into a pitbull.

There's a reason why people give up their dogs and whereas this might be reasonable one, such as a new landlord not wanting dogs, it could also be because the dog shits everywhere, bites, is destructive, excessively anxious or barks non-stop.

When you take on a dog from a dogs' home you are taking a risk. That isn't usually the case when you get a dog from a reputable breeder.

@Wheat2Harvest Exactly that. Thank you. I'm all for 'adopt, don't shop' when it comes to certain types of family pet (and have rescued several furries in the past), but not dogs. As I said upthread, I have really good reasons for needing a dog with a well-known, trusted history.

I agree OP. I have a puppy coming that will be old enough to come home around Christmas or new year. It won’t be coming home for Christmas. We need a calm and quiet house to welcome pup home.
Established doesn’t mean good and KC reg means next to nothing. I would be very suspicious of so many related dogs at the property.
We went through the breed club rather than KC reg. We also went to shows to meet breeders and figure out who we really felt we could trust.

No, a responsible breeder shouldn't be selling puppies "in time for Christmas". Hell, a lot of the good ones will try and avoid litters around December full stop, hoping to avoid the sort of people that buy puppies as an xmas present.

And for the adopt-don't-shoppers, I've seen certain dodgy rescues before that don't shut their doors over the Christmas period. I know this seems to be a somewhat radical thought but there are bad rescues, just as there are bad breeders!

I would guess it depends on who the puppy is going to. Quiet middle aged couple with no children, probably fine. Young family with lots of children, not so fine. I would expect the breeder to find out what Christmas plans i had and work out if it was suitable for me to take the puppy then or not. When I've bought a puppy from a breeder, by the time I'm ready to bring the pup home, i consider the breeder to be a friend and they know a lot about me and my home life.

Breeders don’t tend to own both parents. The chances of them owning both sides of the perfect bloodline would have to be fairly slim I’d have though. Breeders travel miles to find the perfect match, sometimes going abroad.

Off topic but...
It never seems to occur to the 'adopt don't shop' faction that if nobody bred dogs on purpose, the only puppies born would be the random results of oops litters from dogs of unknown temperament and health owned by irresponsible people.

We have one from a breeder ,she’s hard work ,barking ,weeing indoors ,when it rains
And one advertised free on Facebook,a friend of a friend of a friend ,and we took him ,because we were so worried where he would end up otherwise.we have a primary age child ,so no rescue would allow us a dog .
But our Facebook chappie ,is just the most loyal ,trusted companion you could wish for ,could not wish for a better dog .
I suppose though ,a bitch only comes in to season once a year ,so if that happens to be time wise that the pups are ready at Xmas ,it can’t be helped..I don’t agree with breeders deliberately breeding dogs ,while there are so many in shelters ,I feel there should be a ban for a couple of years while all the shelter dogs find homes .
I wouldn’t buy from a breeder again.ive read a lot on Mumsnet ,and I don’t think my breeder was a very good ,in hind sight she was only doing it for the money .
