Dog kept nipping me... Advice please

If you were visiting a friend, and their dog (not a puppy) nipped you numerous times - as in the dog was wandering around and nipped me whenever they passed me, as well as sitting with their ears back staring at you, would you be unnerved by it?

Because I bloody well was.

Admittedly I don’t go around very often so I’m a relative stranger, but other friends and family dogs don’t behave like this towards me.

Can’t decide if I overreacted by leaving or not.

Not you're not over-reacting, domestic dogs shouldn't do this.
Why doesn't your friend shut the dog away when they have visitors? (Or train the dog not to bite people - but that might be asking too much from your dappy friend)

The dog just doesn’t listen. He’s cute but an absolute dickhead, gets stupidly excited at everything. Doesn’t follow any basic commands.

I grew up with this breed of dog and although excitable they never nipped or stared anyone down like that.

But I’ve never owned a dog so wasn’t sure if it is sometimes normal?! I sound like a right thicko.

If the dog won't listen it should be on a lead. Ours still gets over-excited when we have visitors so he's put on his house line for a while until he settles. Not acceptable to have a dog that nips at guests - even puppies should be prevented from doing this.

Honestly, it sounds like you were scared, the dog was scared and the owner was an idiot for not recognising this and doing something about it.

DSis keeps her almost 1 year old dog on a lead when people visit because he cannot stop himself from constantly licking them, he’s ridiculous. He licked my jeans for 10 mins straight last time.

I wasn’t scared initially but after the last nip and him glaring at me I left sharpish.

Any particular training or just a general one?

The dog needs to be taught to settle down and ignore visitors when they enter the room. Victoria Stilwell does a lot of training on desensitising dogs towards visitors to their home - it's not a quick process but it does work. We've used it on our dog when the postman arrives and now he doesn't even wake up, let alone bark and make a huge fuss.
