Does your dog insurance cover public liability?

Came across an accident this morning where a young dog on an extendable lead had suddenly shot into the road and collided with a motorcyclist causing him to come off on the road. Dog owner had thought lead was 'locked' short but obviously not. Dog appeared fine. Biker shaken but ok. Motorbike damaged. Dog owner gave biker their details. Does dog insurance cover you for public liability? If your dog causes an accident, then I assume you're held liable? I'm not a dog owner but would like one and it just got me thinking.

Not sure about cat policies, but dog policies I’m pretty sure they all cover PLI. Poor motorcyclist.

Extending g leads are the work of the devil, I nearly hit a husky once who was trailing 10m behind owner and darted in front of me, fortunately I have a good emergency stop!!! (drive a silent hybrid) Owner wasn’t concerned whereas I felt sick.

If dog owners join the Dogs Trust they get free 3rd party membership - it's £25 per year

Yep. I think it should be compulsory. You're taking the dog into a public place, accidents can happen.

If you're not normally insured then Dogs Trust membership is well worth it for public liability cover.

If you have contents/building insurance this also gives you public liability cover and will cover any incident with your dog on or off your property.
