New puppy joining a 5-month puppy

Oh my god. In three weeks I’ll have an 8-week staff joining my just 5- month old rottie and I need advice on how to work it. Leni (rottie) is doing well with training but still has a massive way to go. How will I handle the two of them, any tips please??

Don't. Just don't. A five month old pup and a two month old pup are a disaster waiting to happen.

Don't do it. Wait a couple of years until your current pup has grown up and has been trained. You need him to be a good example to a pup, not still a pup himself.

And that has nothing to do with the breeds btw. I've seen it happen with spaniels, border terriers and pointers. Contact staff breeder now so she or he can start looking for a more suitable home for pup.

I wouldn't dream of getting another puppy when yours is only 5 months old. Your first probably hasn't even started to enter the adolescent phase which is very testing and can last many many months.

What's the rationale for getting another so soon? The advice is to wait until your dog is an adult and well trained with good behaviours to pass on to the puppy.

Best time to introduce New Dog is when First Dog is at least three. First Dog will then make training New Dog an utter breeze!

You need to google littermate syndrome which will tell you why it’s a REALLY bad idea to have 2 puppies. You need to let the first dog become an adult before adding a second.

Why are you doing this? It will not be in either dog's best interest. I would strongly advice against doing this. Not saying it to be cruel, but if you want to have a dog that is settled in the family and reasonably trained this is a very, very bad move. Your beautiful Rottie will be a powerful dog in no time and will need excellent training to be the best dog it can be.

I recommend you read In Defence of Dogs by John Bradshaw to learn a bit more about canine behaviour and Total Recall by Pippa Mattinson as it is excellent. Also watch training videos by Kikopup.

Sorry OP, but I'm another that thinks this is a really bad idea.

Your older dog is just about to hit adolescence and you want to add an 9 week old puppy into the mix?!

Please don't.

You’ll have loads of problems, one of the worst being that the puppies will run off together at every opportunity.

The earliest you can get a second puppy is when the first one is 1yo for dogs that are very trainable and owners who have put in a lot of work. A2 year gap is more realistic for most dogs.

I have almost 4 month old puppy and the last thing on my mind is getting another one.
Even the thought of another puppy sound insane! Raising even just one of them is hard hard work if you want to do things the right way. But two with such a little age gap?
Why are you doing this? Or are you trolling?

To make things worse, these are not easy breeds and you probably won´t be able to train them the way they should be trained. You just won´t have time to focus on them individually as much as a puppy needs.

They will need to be trained, walked, fed and EVERYTHING entirely separately, if you are intent on going ahead.. read up on littermate syndrome (obvs they aren't actual littermates but the gap is WAY too small between them)

If you can't separate them entirely you will end up with either a) dogs who get on initially then later fight, orb) dogs bonded to each other and not to you... neither exactly ideal, let along a pair of such large and potentially hard to handle breeds...

And a a 5 month old is no where near trained so taking on another is madness.

I only have one 5 month old.. she's enough, but friends had two puppies at the same time and they really really regret it now..
