Hi all just looking for a little support,
My mums 12 year old dog was put down tonight and it was the hardest thing I've ever done. He was a 12 year old greyhound, he fell down the stairs earlier today and fractured his leg and they said they couldn't do anything for him. Before me and my husband had our son, the dog (bolt) was our absolute Bestfriend we would have him round every single day,give the little guy anything he wanted he was our baby. My mum has disabilities so we would take him for long walks and feed him e.t.c. The bond we had with him was so strong we felt the same for him as we do our son now. I'm just so sad I can't believe it's happened? I feel numb at the moment. He was such a good boy and I'm going to miss him so much.

It's fine to cry, he was your best friend. You did the only thing for him that you could do today. Bolt is a great name, was he a fast runner??

So sorry for your loss. If you need to keep crying just keep crying, it will help. He sounds like a lovely boy! X

This is heartbreaking. All you can do is to grieve for him and accept that loss is part and parcel of having pets. It sounds like he had the best life a dog could wish for!

I'm so sorry, it's heartbreaking when you lose a furry family member. You obviously adored him & it sounds as though he had a good life with you. Let yourself cry & grieve, it does get easier as time goes by.

I'm really sorry op. I went through the same at the end of May. My German shepherd dog had a good life and his illness (cancer) was quick. Putting him down was both the easiest decision I've ever made and yet the hardest thing I've ever done as well. I always said I wouldn't let him suffer at the end though.
There needs to be so much more understanding towards the grief we feel for our pets. I didn't eat for a week afterwards and was constantly in tears. Several months on and I still think about him many times a day and shed a few tears occasionally. It's affected me as a person hugely. The bond I had with him was so strong and I cried far more for him than I ever did for some relatives that I have lost as I spent so much more time with him. The grief is very very real.
All I can say is that time does help it to feel better and not so raw. Let yourself grieve for him though. I had my dog individually cremated and have kept his ashes in a special place. I also planted some forget me not seeds for him in the garden and put together a memory box of all his old things. Doing those things helped me to move on a bit. Many people thought it stupid to go that far for a dog, but he was my companion every day for 10 years and always at my side.

@talia66
I'm so sorry for your loss and thankyou for your kind words
@peoplearepeople
Thankyou so much for taking the time to comment. It's really hard to loose a dog. I was texting a friend and thought 'she must think I'm over reacting' (she didn't at all) but when you loose a dog it's like loosing your family member. My mum said she cried more when her dogs died then when her cousin suddenly passed away.
My mums other greyhound passed away around a year and a half ago and that was really tough she was suffering a lot though. Your right the time does heal but the W memories never fade. We got my mum my mums first dog when I was around 9 then she passed away when around a year and half ago and bolt who passed away tonight we got when I was around 15/16 so they're like family members you grow up with!

Thankyou for the kind words everyone. Was worried posting this was going to get someone go 'it's only a dog?' But when it's your dog it's not just a dog, they're a family member and your bestfriend.

I'm so sorry, OP. We had to put our black lab to sleep on Wednesday so I know what you're going through. I'll be thinking of you as we both go through these first few days without our pups.

When we lose a pet, my partner always says “he knew he was loved” and that always set me off.

@tadpole39 the one that sets me off is when my husband says 'he was my Bestfriend'
@Episcomama
Oh I'm so sorry to hear that. It's such a horrible situation to be in. I'll be thinking of you too, and know your not alone! I hope your lab didn't suffer and went comfortable

My sister has had to do the same with her beloved whippet today. A small op yesterday that developed into severe infection overnight and with no reserves they had to let him go. They are in shock as you must be. So sorry for your loss too. Be gentle on yourself. X
