Young Lurcher - how to find a new home?

Posting on behalf of a friend who's ended up with a one year old lurcher bitch. Long story, but friend took her in when her owner couldn't keep her (health issues). She's had her for about four months and did wonder about keeping her, but friend isn't experienced with these dogs and whilst she has two other dogs of her own, this one isn't gelling.

I've met the dog a number of times and I think she's lovely. Very cuddly and loves attention. Unfortunately there's no way she'd fit in here with the other dogs, as she's not so keen on other dogs, and we have a cat.

Anyone have suggestions as to the best place to approach about rehoming her? Friend has been researching, but is wary of getting it wrong and the dog being passed from pillar to post or worse.

I would try a breed specific rescue such as www.greyhoundandlurcherrescue.co.uk/dogsearch.aspx

Please discourage your friend from trying to rehome herself

Lurchers are lovely pets hope she finds a good home

Thank you.

I think that was one of the ones she was looking at. She doesn't want to do the re-homing herself, just isn't sure which group to go to for help. She asked me as she knows I talk to the breed specific group for two of mine (as the leader is our trainer), so wondered if I'd have any bright ideas on how to spot the good groups from the not so good. She's feeling bad about re-homing. Having seen them all interact I think it would be the best idea for the dog. Don't get me wrong, she's loved and fed and looked after, but I can't see it being sustainable given friend's and partner's jobs and the existing dogs. I'd love to take her but we'd be in almost the same position.

Are there any local rescue centres with a great reputation & who do really thorough checks? That may be better than breed specific rescue centres just in terms of their ease of vetting new potential owners

I hope she’s found a lively forever home, poor wee pup (no one’s fault, but still hard on the pup)

www.lurcher-link.org/ are very experienced and might be able to help, or at least point your friend in the right direction.

They're looking at local rescue places. Seeing what the reviews are like, etc.

It is sad that we're all not the right fit. Very much hoping it's found so she can have the life for her.

Thank you. I've sent her the link.

Thank you. Will do.

She's in Scotland (I should've said!). I'll take her to where she needs to be.

I'm useless with forums and pictures!

Sorry, typing without brain being in gear (lack of sleep will have that effect). She's just south of the border, so in north England, and she's a good eighteen months (possibly plus a bit).

ELGR is brilliant. Really worth contacting them.
