Neighbours dog bit ours

Last weekend, our neighbours Jack Russell escaped its garden and got out onto the back street behind our houses.

DH was emptying the car out so our dog (a beagle) was sat in the backseat on his seatbelt and in his harness. The door was open to let air in and so DH could empty the car but keep the dog secure too.

Anyway, neighbour tried to recall his dog but he wasn't interested and he leapt into DH's car and managed to bite our dog on the underside of his stomach. He bled but no lasting damage and no vet treatment required thankfully.

However neighbour didn't apologise and just got his dog and left (he's not a pleasant person so I didn't really expect much else). I'm really angry my dog got bit though and a couple of days later he reacted to another terrier type dog that he's always been fine with - I'm assuming out of fear Angry

What's the best way to get him over being bitten like that? He's normally fine with other dogs and I can distract him with food so he sits and ignores - is that enough do you think?

Picture for cuteness!

Sadly I've been in the same shoes, with a local dog. It's attacked mine 3 times, and the only fortune was on the 3rd occasion, my hand got bitten trying to get this dog off mine. It went to court as someone else had reported the dog too by this stage, and it's now under a Magistrate order to be muzzled and on a lead at all times in public. The owner thinks that a Halti = a muzzle, so of course someone elses dog got badly bitten two weeks ago. I've given up reporting it as the Police aren't interested if it is dog on dog - our pets aren't protected by any laws, it seems.

We're moving house as a result, I'm just so sick of watching for this dog all the damned time and the owner is just as aggressive as the dog - I've had to report him twice for harrassment and yelling at me in the street, saying I'm a nutter and other lovely compliments Hmm

Behaviour wise, it's made ours fearful aggressive and it's a tough one. We tend to find the quietest walks we can, distract with treats (good ones like chicken, sausage or cheese) when we meet other dogs, and I'd say it's taken around 2 years for ours to get his confidence with other dogs back. He wears a yellow "nervous" bandana, and if he stops and looks worried, he goes back on his lead which seems to help him. There is another dog walker in the village who is an animal behaviouralist and she's been a lifeline if you can afford to use one. It's changed my dog completely, and it makes me furious that there is such little you can do about people who shouldn't own a pet fly let alone a dog.

Oh @Span1elsRock that's horrible I'm sorry you've had to go through the same thing.

I've been walking him as usual and he generally seems to be okay but he's really not happy to even see neighbours dog now and growls and lunges for him. Obviously I keep him on his lead and avoid where possible but it's so unfair!

He's such a good little dog and then this happens Angry

If you are lucky enough to have a local dog warden (we don't and it's been a massive issue), I would report it to them. They will then at least have it on record and for all you know, this dog has attacked others too. Your dog was in a car and secured so did nothing to provoke this attack.

Sadly we don't have one here either.

His dog is well known for being an escape artist and for being dog aggressive but as he's never bitten a person, nobody is interested sadly!

It seems it's okay for dogs to attack other dogs totally unprovoked.
