Do I need to go and say goodbye?

Family dog is 9 years old and we're pretty sure he was either puppy farmed or the runt of the litter (didn't know about puppy farming at the time). He's had health problems that have been managed but for the past month or so has had a dodgy hind leg. Been on anti inflammatory off the vet which seemed to help, the pretty much told us to wait and see. This week, both back legs have gone and he's struggling to bear weight. Vet has given him injections in both legs and said to wait a week but if he gets any worse to take him straight back in.

Phoned my mum this morning and she said he is refusing food and drink (always been a fussy eater but usually okay) and hasn't been the toilet. She's got another appointment at vets for this afternoon.

I am devastated at the thought of my little man in any pain or discomfort, he's been my best mate since I was a teen. It doesn't look good, does it? I guess what I'm asking is should I prepare myself and go down to my dm's to spend some time with him? I'm devastated

Oh no. So sorry. In your shoes, I would most definitely go down to see him and give him some love. You'll regret it if you don't.

I spoke to my mum earlier, he'd managed to get himself to the kitchen for some water and she was cooking him some chicken so hopefully he's ate 🤞🏻

I'm gonna go spend the day with him tomorrow 💔

I can see a situation where you regret not going, but I can't see a situation where you regret going.

Even if he recovers for a time, you won't regret an extra visit and some time spent with him now.

What has the vet said the actual problem is?

There are lots of things that can help with ‘dodgy legs’

The vets aren't sure what the problem is, possibly displaced kneecaps but with his age and his other health problems they're not sure how he'd manage an operation.

I've been to see him, he's hobbling and looks a bit bewildered god bless him. Although he has munched his chicken, had some biscuits and even managed to get outside for a wee and I got a tail wag and a kiss. He's on medication for a week and is back next Wednesday to see if he's improved and what can be done. Even his little sister is subdued, normally she's winding him up no end but she's just cuddling in to him. My poor boy 💔
