Dog poop!

Bit of a bizarre question and I promise I'm not a poop troll but how many times a day does your dog poop? And how much do they eat/how often? I have 2 dogs both on the same diet and quiet a difference in output from them both. Trying to work out if one needs taking to the vets

3 times a day, always nice and firm and easily pickupable. One around 7 am, then 12 noon ish and then 6 pm ish

Once, occasionally twice a day.

Consider quality than quantity, if they are firm, moist and well formed I wouldn't worry too much. Sloppy or hard/dry/pebbles need diet looked at.

She has well below the recommended daily amount of food, mix of dry and wet and we supplement with raw and cooked veggies. 2 meals a day

Two to three times a day. Always formed and easy to pick up and a nice chocolate colour.

But it took a long while for us to get there - we tried loads before finding ones he liked and tolerated!

We tried lots of different brands and combinations of dry/wet to find what suited dog1 when he was younger and he's been happy with that since, he's now 5, poops 2-3 times a day. Dog 2 arrived on the scene nearly a month ago and was only fed dried food with previous owner, continued with the dry but she poops 6-7 times a day. Has been wormed as she had worms when we got her, since then her stools start out normal/healthy looking and by the end it's soft/mushy. Not sure if to try her on a different brand food and stick to the dry or try a combination?

6-7 times a day?! That's a lot of poop!

It certainly is. She is taken out 3 times a day and still goes number 1 and 2 in the garden a couple of times on top of that. She does go all night but by morning is bursting to go out.

Does anyone have advice on how to find the best food suited to her, with dog 1 it was easy because he just wouldn't eat if he didn't like it so just continued until he finally ate. Dog 2 will literally eat everything and anything she can.

Generally it'll be a case of trial and error.

Feed them totally separately and try the poopy dog on different foods - remember you'll need to introduce anything new slowly or you risk ending up with an upset dog!

This seems a lot I think I might consider a check up with the vet.

This may be a nervous stomach due to rehoming. Our rescue was exactly like this at first. Rather than change her food, try feeding her small meals more often. It sounds contradictory but if the food is passing through so quickly she may lack nutrients. A small amount may be easier to digest. Gradually you can decrease the number of times she is fed. Now my dog is on 3 meals a day and poops at exactly at the same time. She does two large firm ones on the morning walk and occasionally one much softer one in the afternoon walk.

I know what you mean about sounding like a poo troll. Of all the things I thought about regarding dog ownership, I never expected to have so many conversations about dog poo. For the first year it seemed all we ever talked about.

I did put it down to nerves at first, but she does seem alot more settled now but with no change to her toilet habits. I think she is really skinny, might it be worth giving her dry food with water to make it soft? Will that make it easier to digest in small quantities

We can’t always recognise the internal struggle. I put on a show for the outside but my nerves are reflected in my gut. I expect it is the same for dogs. Each dog is different but smaller meals worked for ours. I would say it was about 2 months before the poo issues resolved.

Mine pooped more when they were getting used to a new food. One eats slightly more than the other and poops 2-3 times a day now and the other usually 2 times a day - morning and evening.

That's a lot of movements. I wondering if something is stopping her from fully evacuating her bowels when she goes?

Mine go 2 to 3 times a day. Once 1st thing, another later in the morning, then sometimes an evening poo. We're fed dry Millie's Wolfheart kibble, with a spoon of tinned millies wet, for added enjoyment, with a little water to make a gravey, Arne they each get the amount according to their guidance on weight, breed and age.

One goes once.. she’s the biggest (they’re all chihuahuas so she’s hardly huge)
One goes 3 times he’s the smallest has always done 3 a day from puppyhood unless he’s ill almost a blessing he’s clockwork for everything.

And then we have the unholy midsized one who goes between none and 5 ( or practically any time she’s let out she produces a small forced piece) she was born with a hernia on her bowel which was fixed as much as possible but she still has the odd issue if she doesn’t drink enough (blind so can’t see the dish if it’s in the wrong place/other dogs in front of it so she buggers off)

Mine are all free fed, dry food mostly (Local brand they all eat and mostly do well on besides the alien and her anomalies)
