Hi MNers of the pet room, we're finally getting a dog so can join you! We're going to be getting a rescued greyhound and beyond excited.

So, what shall I buy? And where from? What do I need and what do I want?

On my list is:

-house collar
-tag
-martingale collar
-lead
-house coat
-waterproof coat

These things will ideally be in rainbow print! Although we've been advised to get yellow collar and lead as it will apparently warn other dog users to keep their dog away from ours?

Thanks for any help and advice!

Exciting times ahead!

Is it a puppy or an older dog you are getting?
Things I got for pup included -
Stair gate
Bowls
Antler to chew
Small selection of toys (wanted to see what type of toy pup enjoyed most)
Dog bed (but I can count on one hand how many times he's used it!)
Lots of very small training treats
Poo bag dispenser that you attach to the lead (so much easier than trying to remember poo bags every time you leave the house)
Long line
Puppy shampoo

We've not had a grey for a few years but we got all our stuff online (search for sighthound leads etc) or at a great shop at waterhead in the Lake District (if you're local?!).

We just had one collar and lead, no martingale, and a thin waterproof coat and a thick winter one. She didn't need one in the house. The collars are quite addictive, you can get some fabulous designs.

Enjoy! They're amazing dogs. But don't forget they're big... the first night with ours we turned our back for a second and she ate all our takeaway in the blink of an eye. I hadn't realised how easily they can reach kitchen work surfaces.

We're getting an older rescue, not a puppy!

@NoNo laughing at the panic that must have caused!

An extra sofa because the greyhound will want one of their own

Rehomed my grey four months ago. Can't imagine life without him. A duvet works fine as a bed, joey steals mine anyway. A feeding stand as it helps again bloat. Definitely another sofa lol Greyhounds are brilliant so chilled x

My parents have a large cage, decked put with duvet and sleeping bag for their recently rescued ex racer.

Having lived in a kennel his entire life they were told he'd need a safe space. He takes himself off to the cage when he's had enough of us.

Our greyhound is much happier being walked in a harness than a lead so you might want to add a harness to your list. We’ve got a ruff wear harness (you need size L/XL for a greyhound) and a halti lead. It’s also worth getting a muzzle, we were advised to walk our hound in one for the first few weeks until we knew what his prey drive is like, useful for vets trips too. Also snacks-pigs ears and chickens feet are popular with hounds.

My greyhound loves soft toys, but not to kill, just to cuddle up with. Her favourite is sully from monsters inc.

My boy has a bespoke made collar - I wanted a purple one.. lol. I got him a rough wear web master harness - totally fab. I got him a hand made dog bed which he refused to use as he sleeps with me, so it quickly became a cat bed! He has a veritable wardrobe of coats as he feels the cold - I got most of them off the internet as he is a large breed and Pets At Home dont really seem to cater for larger dogs! Reading this back I realise I sound like an idiot #sorrynotsorry

Have googled the ruffwear harness @purplecatshopaholic and they look great. Do they wear their coats over the top? Do you find it feels more secure than a collar and lead set up?
