The doghouse

Hide chew alternatives

My 2 year old JRT loves the hide chews however I know that they aren't good for him - heavily bleached, can get stuck in his gut etc and want to find an alternative. I bought him some whimzees which he likes but they last him minutes, can anybody recommend a proper chewy alternative? Preferably not an animal part ( I know that's a contradiction given what hide is!)

The deer antlers?
They don’t fracture as easily as they are so hard but then they can break their teeth. I really don’t like dog chews but I don’t have an aggressive chewing dog. He licks the marrow out of them mostly.
Mine has one of those indestructible teddy toys and he will chew that a bit

@PookieDo I'd like to avoid actual animal parts if I can, not sure I like the idea of him eating that in bed next to me. Have you tried the Nylabones?

Like I said mine doesn’t really chew, he licks things. He will chew the seam of the indestructible teddy though. I had the deer antler but it’s quite heavy so he doesn’t carry it around just licks it on the floor!

Maybe look at all the tough stuff they have in the pet shop, some of it looks really good

Perhaps the answer is to (a) not allow eating in bed and/or (b) not allow the dog on a human bed? Then he can chew what he likes.

But none of my dogs have ever liked chewing on the non-animal substitutes - nylabone type stuff may claim that dogs think they are tasty, but none of mine have agreed! However, if you want to try something that isn't a bit of an animal, mine fairly loves yak cheese. It's not cheap but it lasts for a long time, and my dog is a lover of things to chew and much bigger than yours

@PookieDo I'll have a look in the petshop when I go in next!

@Moondust001 ignoring the bed comment but the yak cheese looks very interesting and well worth a try thank you.

You can get the Yakers on amazon or at pets at home. You can get rawhide alternatives. Smart bones or dream bones depending on brand. They are usually made from sweet potatoes.

Mine will only chew natural ones - I think plastic ones must be a bit boring for them tbh, sorry!

Mine totally ignores the Nylabone. In fact he’s only ever interested by juicy bones and pigs ears.

My patterdale x gets through the Yak chews really quickly and doesn’t particularly like them . At the moment in our lounge we have a large ostrich bone , an antler , a cows ear and a random lump of camel hide , all of which he moves from place to place occasionally . He does like the ostrich braided tendon and ostrich spaghetti and although they don’t last long he does actually have to chew .

My ddog likes the vegetable chew we bought her from pets corner. They had a variety of different shapes/chew sizes.

Not quite the same but my (now departed) ddog loved Kong toys stuffed with cheese or peanut butter etc. Could alternate chewing and trying to get to the treat inside

Mine absolutely love Nylabones though I always watch them very carefully as I'm not convinced they couldn't bite through eventually.
I picked up some bamboo dog chews in TK Maxx yesterday which have been very successful, but again am monitoring....

A friend brought some Smartbones for my puppy and she LOVES them...specially the ball shaped ones as she chases them before settling down for a good chew!

Oh the money I've spent on chewsGrin
Very popular are.... pigs ears, anything ostrich, currently has a large leg bone on the go it stinks dried chicken fillet, duck neck.
Totally turned his nose up at the Yak chew and a coffee wood stick. He loves a beef tail to start with but now turns his nose up at thatConfused

bigoaws sounds like we share a dog ! that said our ostrich leg doesn’t smell at all . I do think the ostrich must have something about it as the braided lamb tendons are nowhere near as popular as the ostrich tendons .

floralnomad 😀 the ostrich doesn't smell as bad as a cow bone, it sort of smells smoked. I've not seen ostrich spaghetti tho.

I buy it at Dobbies garden centre , it’s the only place locally that sells any ostrich .
