I went to meet my friend’s new puppy yesterday and picked him up for a cuddle. He managed to wriggle out of my grip, fell and landed on the grass lawn. I think he landed on his paws and then rolled over, but I can’t be sure as it all happened so quickly. He whined for a few seconds and then stood up again but was (understandably) quite shy and cautious with me after that. He’s about two months old, a small breed and must have fallen just over a metre in height.

I feel absolutely terrible and am worried that I could have hurt him. My friend texted later to say he’d had a nap (he sleeps a lot at the moment!) and honestly seems completely fine and is back to his usual self.

I just can’t stop worrying about it and feel so, so guilty Sad

It may help to know that I dropped my puppy on her head on a hard floor when I went to see her at the breeders. She wriggled out of my arms. I was mortified at the time. But she is now 9 years old and has not been damaged in any way by that experience.

Puppies are like babies... they bounce.

I stabbed my sisters new dog once. Was cooking in the kitchen, turned round with the knife in my hand and he jumped up. Was only a small cut but god did I feel awful.

Dogs are resilient, he hasn't held it against me!

Yhe puppy will be fine, plus he landed on grass which is fairly springy.

Not when she was a puppy, but my dog leapt out of my arms a few years ago onto concrete - I was meeting DD at a railway station, very busy, dog is small, which is why I was carrying her - and the dog was so thrilled to see DD that she just sort of flew out of my arms and landed with the most horrific thump on the ground.

She was absolutely fine. I felt terrible.

Puppies are quite bouncy.

Oh thank you so much for the reassurance everyone. I’ve been in a state of panic about it since yesterday!

Our puppy jumped out of ds's arms on the very first day we had him. Landed from about 18 inches up and then limped. New Year's Day. DS distraught, puppy all limpy. Off to emergency vet (for sake of both puppy and DS) and puppy stopped limping when we got there and bounced round vet having treats. Now 8 months, still bounces around like a loon.

Honestly, don't worry. It happens.
