New Dog after Losing One

I lost my beloved dog 2 years ago and finally feel ready to have another.

I loved her breed (German Shepherd) but am concerned about getting another one the same in case it reminds me too much of my lost dog.

I'm just so worried as she really was the most perfect dog in the world and it's taken me a long time to get over her loss.

Did you have another same breed dog? If so, was it ok or did they remind you of your lost one too much? Or am I being totally ridiculous?

Yes. I lost my beloved Labrador 18 months ago. We had two labs, so one was left. We ended up with another lab by chance. He was a Mumsnet dog, kind of a foster but doesn’t look like he’s going back. All three labs are adorable, but all have their own individual characteristics and personality. They all love you and you won’t be reminded of your other dog for long.

You could get a male GSD? So you may not compare them in your head.

But as a pp says they all have different characters.

We just had such a special bond and it's taken me so long to get over her. I'm just worried the new dog won't be so amazing.

But thanks! I know where i am with GSD's so I'm glad to have been told I am being ridiculous! Grin

I’ve only ever had 1 breed of dog, I think I would compare them negatively if I ever got a different one.
I do have to say though that one in particular was my “heart” dog and the 2 I’ve had since then, although I love/d them very much, they could never take his place. I dont compare them though, they are all different.

Growing up, DH's family always had the same breed of dog, and so it felt like the natural order of things that we would continue that tradition by also having that breed. They've all had different characters & all are special in their own way. There's always one that particularly steals your heart though, like my current one has with me.

Well, the one I lost, while much loved, was far from perfect so am relieved current one is different! But seriously I wouldn't worry, it's normal to compare, but they are all different and all (well most) lovable

I lost my ddog just over a month ago, she was a staffie. I have just rescued a staffie x but he’s very different to her (also different colour). He hasn’t taken the place of my old dog but I love him loads already. I was wary about getting the same breed but then I saw his face on a rescue Fb page and just had to have him.
