The doghouse

Dh says I'm a drama queen (re cooling dogat night)

My long-haired GSD sleeps in my bedroom at night and it gives me anxiety at night when I hear him panting/drinking a tonne of water. I was beyond uncomfortable tonight with the humidity so had a cold shower before bed. It made me feel so much better and I thought I would do the same for my dog. DDog hates baths (but loves muddy, boggy water), DH says I am being OTT as I'm distressing our boy. What do you think? I'm sure his skin will be fine.

I used to put a wet cold towel down for my dog to lie on.

I sometimes dampen my dog slightly so she cools as she evaporates. I wouldn’t give her a cold shower though, or completely drench her and leave her wet all night - that’s cruel!

I've towel dried him. He's snoring away quite happily (to me). Why is it cruel? I've bought every cooling device imaginable and my dog avoids them all. Feeling bad now!

My dog is long haired and double coated so doesn't like the warm weather, but I know for a fact that if I were to start giving her cold baths she would not be happy.

She's 8 years old so has managed to get through quite a few very warm nights over the years.

Crispbutty's wet towel idea is good, dog then has the choice whether to lie on it or not. You could buy a cool mat for him though, if you think he'd like that.

Ah see you've already bought cooling things.

Maybe the heat doesn't actually bother him.

He didn't whine in the bath, he seemed okay to be in there for 30 secs. Rewarded him with some roast chicken.

Roast chicken? No wonder he's snoring away happily. My dog would walk through fire for roast chicken Grin

I just put a fan on in our dogs bedroom when it’s hot and he seems fine

It's been so muggy, cooling your pooch is the responsible thing. It's heatstroke season! Ours gets a wet towel to lie on if she wants, which she often does, particularly during last year's heatwave

Confused Grin

Is this a reverse? Smile

I think you can confidently expect your dog to be too hot for the duration now. Roast chicken nightly? Yes. He'll be up for that.
