The doghouse

My beautiful dog is being PTS tomorrow

My lovely dog is being put to sleep tomorrow. I’m devastated. She’s 11 and has mammary cancer. The tumour has grown significantly and the skin on it is starting to break down, she’s also coughing which suggests it’s spread. The hardest thing is she’s still wagging her tail but her prognosis is poor and I don’t want her to suffer when the skin breaks down further

I’m heartbroken, this is the hardest decision I’ve had to make. If anyone wants to give me a handhold it would be much appreciated.

I went through this with my beloved dog, so I know what you're going through. It's a horrible time but you're doing the right thing for your dog. Sending a handhold and a hug. Flowers

Have tests confirmed it has spread? My ddog has just had quite a big mammary tumour +surrounding tissue removed successfully.

No, tests haven’t confirmed it but with the position and size it’s impossible to get good margins around it. We did have her booked in for op but the insurance have been absolutely terrible requesting more and more information to then, 4 weeks later, refuse to pay out and now it’s too late.

Ah sorry to hear that. We didn't have insurance and op was £750 with pre testing £250 +antibiotics previously incase it was an infection = total about £1700 which we def struggled to find.
Awful you have ended up too late op.

I had to have my beloved dog put to sleep on Friday, it was one of the worst decisions I’ve had to make and I never believed the cliche that you know when the time is right. I felt such guilt immediately after it was done and miss her an incredible amount, but now I can see it was the right thing to do, even though it was - and still is painful.
The process itself was relatively quick and it was pain free. She just went to sleep and the vets were so kind. Do you have someone to go with you?

Get the vet to come to you and say goodbye with her on your lap in her favourite place ..

I'm so sorry that you are going through this. My gorgeous dog was PTS back in March and it is still painful to think about our final night with him. It's hard, but you are doing the very best thing for her. Flowers

Oh no this is always so sad to read. They are an enormous part of your life. She knows you love her and she loves you, that will never go away even though she might not be here anymore

Very sorry and sending you love 💐🌟

I'm so sorry OP. We went through it with our dog over 18 months ago and I still tear up sometimes.

My mum got the ashes from ours and we scattered them in the park. Can you do anything like that?

Thanks

We get so attached to our pets and love them so much.

Know what you’re going through, it’s a year since our lovely poorly Jack Russell was PTS and we miss his cheeky personality every day.

Big handhold for you. You absolutely did the right thing for your lovely girl.

Oh OP, sending hugs to you. Very sad and heartbreaking but it does 100% sound like you're doing the right thing. Mammary Cancer is pretty aggressive and as you said to get good margins when the mass has got very large is very hard and then the wound is prone to breakdown etc .
Vet nurse here if you have any questions. hugs
