Where did you buy your puppy supplies?

Have a new pup coming and need everything as i haven’t opened one before and no one I know has anything to pass on. I’m keeping my eye out on fb marketplace for crate but nothing nearby.

I need crate, bed, blankets, toys, car seat/harness, harness.....

We have pets at home but I found quite expensive. Anywhere else online that’s good value?

Anything that stands out specifically bitey? Was just looking at a crate which at £20 is ok... I need a 23 inch one as I’m getting a mini dachshund.

How do I know what toys are worth it and not?

As a puppy my dog liked the soft toys that had no stuffing in them as he liked to drag them about (looks like road kill as they are flat). However, once they are teething they tend to destroy lots of thing so I moved on to the tough one.
To be honest you can't go wrong with kong toys and they do puppy ones.

Chuckit ultra balls are good as tennis balls are pretty rubbish.

Decent type rope toys for tug games.

I got a cheap collar to get him used to one and just bought better ones when he got bigger.

I think I will be getting him a harness but you don’t wear them indoors so how would I get him used to it? Just put him on it inside? How long should I put him in it?

I avoid pets at home like the plague. All their products are either crap quality, cheaper elsewhere, or both. Plus, their welfare standards are woeful.

This isn't puppy specific, but most of my dog stuff comes from Zooplus.co.uk and Amazon, plus training treats from Treats2Sit4

Look on your local Facebook selling site. I put an ‘in search of puppy supplies’ type post on and got lots of second hand stuff. Especially things like crates, puppy pens etc that they grow out of. Makes more sense than buying something that you won’t need forever.

With regards to a puppy pen. The metal fold out type ones will scratch the wooden floor. Will a fabric one be ok? The pop up ones? I know puppies chew everything but it won’t be in there a lot?

I would only buy the absolute necessities before your puppy arrives as we made mistakes buying things in the wrong size as we didn't realise just how small our puppy actually was. You will need to have your puppy measured for correctly fitting harness and they do grow very quickly.

We used a travel carry case and beds intended for cats to start with, but did buy the size crate needed for adult (only small anyway as JRT). I think we got it from Amazon.

We also made the mistake of buying a large bag of puppy food which seemed good value for quality, but pup didn't enjoy eating and toys which we had also seen recommended but were of interest to him (some rubber chews which are meant to be safe for them, can't remember the make now; and also he had no interest in chasing balls as a pup although they are his favourite now.)

You do need to get a name tag which I think has to say your surname, post code and phone number (but please check this) .

OP you were given loads of advice about the crate on your other thread.
Just get a collar at the moment, I can't see why you'd need a harness for a mini daschund but get measured for one later if necessary.
Wilkos and Amazon for the basics but don't go mad initially it will be a waste of money .

Legally you will need to have the collar and tag in case he managed to get out but you won't be taking him for walks for a few weeks until after he is fully immunised ( assuming you are getting at 8-9 weeks) .

Yes you are supposed to have your puppy secured in the car but he will be so tiny he could go on your lap . We used a carry case for bringing him home but I think a lot of people just cuddle them on their laps for the journey back (depending on length of journey and if there's someone else in the car!)

I probably wouldn't get the harness until you are able to measure him for it.

Make sure any outside gates go right down to ground level as he will be able to get underneath a normal gap (we tied extra plastic sheeting on to ours - I don't mean buy a new gate)

Honestly don't buy loads yet.

We got a crate, collar/tag and a harness, and a lead, as well as food/treats and bowls, bed and blankets, plus a kong and some toys.

I think we spent around £100 in Pets at Home - no point spending loads on the first harness/collar/lead because they'll invariably eat them or grow out of them within a few weeks!

Also beware if spending too much on bed / bedding. We bought a lovely cosy fur lined bed and it was all chewed up. Plus a couple of replacement beds. We eventually got a plastic bed padded with old towels and our own old blankets - not something bought new from the pet shop. Ddog prefers the sofa now!

We’ve recently got a pup and B&M have lots of pet supplies. I bought our crate which looked the same as Argos and Pets At Home but much cheaper, they have treats and toys and we’re also on dog bed number 3 partly due to chewing and partly through to growing but I’m so glad we picked them up around £8 a bed rather than £40!

Please be careful buying food treats from places like B&M - they're often from Asian countries and don't conform to the same standards as British treats.

I've read lots of horror stories of puppies choking or developing blockages from cheap treats (especially rawhide).

Some things are worth spending extra money on!

Don't buy a harness yet because you won't be taking pup on walks until after shots. By that time they might have outgrown the one you buy.
Buy an adjustable collar and get tag engraved.
Amazon and eBay are great for puppy supplies.
Don't buy an expensive bed just yet.
Make sure everything you buy isn't a choking hazard, same as for kids.

@adaline thanks, yes should have said I am quite picky in B&M but they do also have the many of the main brands there too so I stick to those.

I got all ours at pet planet online with a sale on and cash back. Except blankets (IKEA) and treats for training) which I've not got yet. I have a collar and lead, couple of chew toys, soft bed, food bowls, couple of blankets. My daughter has offered up her small hot water bottle for when he is tiny.

I wasted a lot of money in the early days. Get the essentials and for anything else there is amazon prime next day delivery

With my most recent pup it was a long time since I'd had a young pup and I couldn't be bothered searching the house for the half chewed toys I'd put away years ago, so I just started from scratch with supplies.

My boy is a Newfoundland so obviously I got the bigger version, but this pack was the best value I could find online for crate, collar, toys, etc. The only thing I would say is that the smaller dog version seems to come with a soft bed which I wouldn't use in the crate as it'll probably get chewed, I'd use Vet Bed instead for the first few weeks at least.

Bargain shops are usually fine for collars, etc for smaller dogs, but I'm always wary of toys, treats and anything that might be ingested (accidentally or on purpose!)
