Dog post neutering has destroyed cone of shame. Will he bite his stitches out?

In a bit of a panic. Dog had his op yesterday morning. He managed to break his cone and it can’t be reapplied. This was about an hour ago. He’s now licking constantly and appears to be trying to get the stitches in his teeth.

If he started to pull at one would the pain stop him or is there real danger he could open the wound?

I know the licking could cause infection so I’ll be back to vet tomorrow to have him checked over and see what he/she thinks re antibiotics but for now I’m just worried about leaving him crated overnight and waking to find he’s pulled his stitches out.

Any help, advice or reassurance greatly appreciated.

My dog (newly rescued and picked up from the vets freshly spayed) pulled out her own stitches that night (the operation may have been the day before, I cannot remember) we had iodine spray (from the vets) which we sprayed to try to keep the area disinfected and she recovered well.

I'm impressed by the destroying of the cone of shame. A hero amongst dogs I think!

My cat pulled out her stitches and had to be stapled.
Can you get a replacement cone? Find a t shirt that fits? Do you have a pool noodle you can adapt to make a collar? (Really stretching it with that last one!) Hope all goes ok.

Can you get another cone? I would ring the emergency vets number and explain as I have bought one before from mine.

I wouldn't risk him opening the wound up so constant supervision until you can stop him getting at it.

Oh no, I was hoping people would say he’d stop once the tugging in the stitch would hurt. Feck.

We’ve had a look at the cone and it’s really only the fastening that’s fecked so dh gone out to see if he can drill a few holes in it and we can cable tie it closed until the morning.

Dog is snoozing on the floor here now and not at them but I’m positive he’d be at them half the night. He’s only 7months.

I’ll ask the vet about the iodine spray tomorrow.

Really hope dh can salvage the cone as I don’t fancy staying up all night or getting the vet out of his house (rural area) and into town just for a cone.

My vet sprayed horrible tasting stuff and I told him no strictly when he tried to lick it, he left them alone

Yes cone or T-shirt or large pants etc definitely required if he instantly started trying to get at it!

Glad to see it's fixed, we had to put our 5yo dds knickers on him when he tried to lick his wound🤦🏽‍♀️ on top of his bodysuit.......and his cone.....because the little bugger is so persistent

Glad you fixed it! My dog shoved his head inbetween the legs of a chair and shook his head against the legs until his cone was smashed to pieces. Thankfully he didn't touch his stitches.

I don't think a t shirt would work for a male castration (I think you put it on with the back legs in the arm holes and the tail through the neck, then fasten it to the dog's collar.

The t shirt? They wear it to stop them getting access to the wound. Hope this works. Good luck pup and OP!

I used a baby grow with a hole cut out for the tail. My vet recommended it funnily enough.

We used a combination of cones (mine chewed the connectors off the vets one) and medical T-shirt's. The only issue with the shirts was that he could poke his nose down the leg opening to get at the wound.

My cat reversed out of her cone

So we got one of these from the vet. She wasn’t mad keen on that either but she was poppered in so couldn’t escape.
