Smelly discharge from dog

Every now and then our male beagles leaves a really strong smelling brownish discharge on things. It's often on the arm of the sofa where he rests his head but today it's on my bed. It's a very strong smell when you get up close but not a poo smell at all. I have no idea what part of his body it comes from but seems implausible that it's his back end on the sofa arm.

Does anyone know what it might be and whether I need to do anything about it? Pic attached of this morning's patch.

Anal glands probably. Get your vet to check and if needs be squeeze them. It’s. It something to attempt yourself unless you have absolutely no sense of smell!

NOT something to attempt yourself

Yeah I'd go to a vet to squeeze those bad boys.

Is it a fishy smell? Both my dogs get this and as others have said it's anal glands! The vet can squeeze them to release the fluid. My dogs tend to bite their bottoms when the glands are getting full.

Bran flakes are supposed to help keep it all at bay, I throw some down for my dog a few times a week

My terrier used to drag his bottom along the ground when it was anal glands. But that would smell

Ah now our spaniel rubs her bum along the ground and gives off a horrid fishy smell every now and then which I thought was anal glands. This isn't a fishy smell at all.

The bran flakes idea made me wonder though as grain really disagrees with his guts and gives him awful wind and he stole and consumed a box of muesli the other day. I wonder if this is a by product of eating the cereal...

My first thought was anal glands, though when PestDog has leaked it's looked like two concentric circles, the inner one being darker if that makes sense.

Is it possible it's something the dog has rolled in but you haven't noticed until the smell has built up indoors a bit? Clutching at straws here....

Another vote for anal glands (urghhhhh), first time my dog had them squeezed by the vet he went running out of the surgery, trampled all over this poor Labrador having a sleep and covered him in anal goad fluid

Discharge and smell = vet visit

Does he has deep folds in his lower lips? Battendog (spaniel) does and saliva can collect in there. If left long enough without cleaning, it gets sore and leaves these marks everywhere he lays his head.

p.s. if you run your finger along his lower lip and then smell your finger (ug!) it might smell the same as the patch.

p.p.s. dogs are gross.

Oh @missbattenburg that sounds promising. It's def not an anal glands smell and is normally on the sofa arm where he rests his head. He is very jowly. He doesn't smell, it's just the stinky patches he leaves behind so not sure it's worth a vet visit.

@FleurNancy - with Battendog it would get infected and very sore. After a few bouts, in which antibiotis were needed to clear it up, I started to suspect it was causing conjunctivis as the two would often coincidide. It was also linked to a dry, cracked nose. I don't know how and assumed bacteria was spreading over his face and causing problems.

He had a small operation to reduce the lip folds last Oct and it had all been fine since. HIs nosie cleared within 3-4 days and we haven't had any eye problems either since. However, over the last couple of weeks one side is getting smelly again and starting to get sore (disappointing) so may be linked to warmer weather also (drinking more etc).

The vet prescribed these: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006ZN0JSE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?psc=1&ie=UTF8&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

They are much cheaper bought online and helped but battendog hates them. He better tolerates a dilution of hibiscrub on a flannel to keep the area clean. Plus semi-regular blotting it dry with kitchen towel if I notice it's especially wet.

Not saying that would all be the same for your dog but thought it might all be useful in case it is his mouth.

Having a dog who has anal gland issues on a regular basis I would say if it isn't fishy smelling I would be looking at other causes.

Could it just be that he salivates when resting on the sofa so it's stained with food left on his teeth?
