Tips for new puppy?

We have a 3 year old lurcher who is lovely, and in around a week we are getting a jack Russell puppy, he will be nearly 10 weeks when we get him. I'm feeling quite nervous about doing the puppy stage s again. We've already started doing the blanket swop thing but they haven't met face to face yet. I'm getting him a crate and a playpen to put in our kitchen diner for him. Current dog can have the run of the house so she can get some peace and quiet. Any tips for a successful introduction/settling in period gratefully received!

My only advice would be not to expect them to be instant friends. For the first few days my 3 year old dog seemed confused as to why the puppy was there, and the puppy seemed scared of him. After a few days they moved onto acceptance and tolerance, and within a month they were in love with each other. Our puppy now follows are older dog around and they bring each other toys to play with all the time.

Seconded! Ours didn't like the puppy at all! Which is fine as we didn't get her for him! He is also a good 10 and grumpy anyway. It's been 6 months now and she still annoys him a bit by licking his face but other than that they get on so well now! Not a lot of dogs like puppies so don't be upset if yours doesn't as it doesn't last long.

But having had 2 dogs who didn't manage to stay in the same room together without a lot of shouting, and now they sleep together so there is hope :)

Other scenario is you have the grumpiest rottweiler who loves her own company, you get a puppy and she loves it!!

Also, I wish I’d done a bit more research on play fighting. I was really worried that they were actually fighting until I read up and realised that the fact nobody gets hurt and that the big dog always ends up on his back with his legs in the air means it is just play.
