Rescue dog is weeing on chair legs

We’ve had him 5 weeks ,he’s now eating and he’s put on a kg.even got a bit of recall happening.
Every morning I come down to my chair leg soaked in wee.the chair is right next to the pet flap for him to get out in to the garden.its like he knows to head that way to wee ,gets to the pet flap and sees its dark/ cold / rainy..(just guessing here) and then changes his mind and weeks on my chair.ive put a long throw over the chair ,so he’s just weeing on the throw which I’m now washing every morning.
The wee smell is so strong ,I used to have a nice conservatory to sit in.now I can just smell very strong wee.
I’m using pet spray and keeping everywhere clean.
He’s booked in to have his bits off Incase it’s that ,my other dog is a girl.
Plus he’s not doing it in the day.in fact I’ve yet to catch him in the act ,I’ve never seen him wee in the house since the first night.
What can I do / or what am I doing wrong?

If you can smell pee then the dog defintely will smell it and be encouraged to continue to toilet there so you need to up the cleaning or chuck whatever you can if you can't clean it.

As a rescue of 5 weeks I would have thought you are still in the settling phase and not used to using a dog flap let alone one at night. I would be getting up earlier and or letting him out later to avoid him having to toilet in the house.

He needs the snip. Why didn't the rescue do this prior to rehoming? Very unusual.

Anyway until then, remove the chair from the house. Take him to the garden to wee, treat like a puppy again and reward etc.

Put a babygro or onesie on him indoors if the leg lifting continues- he's not likely to do it if he's wearing clothing.

I'd thoroughly scrub the chair with a solution of biological washing powder. If this isn't possible then get rid of it but certainly move it away from the flap. Right now, it smells like a perfectly acceptable dog's toilet. Hence your dog using it as such. I'd also retrain him as you would a pup. He clearly needs taking out in the night. I'm also surprised that the rescue rehomed him without neutering but having his balls off isn't a substitute for house training.

We rescued him from Facebook ,he was advertised for free .we knew the family.friend of a friend kind of thing .i said we would take him as I worried where he would end up..as it is he is amazing except this little issue

Can you contact your local vet for a or a local rescue centre for advice and see what they say? As others have said 5 weeks is stills a settling in period.

I’ve just scrubbed everything ,and the chairs ,we are going to try a late night walk ,
The pet flap he had one at his old home ,so is used to using it ,and he does use it .

I wouldn’t rely on a dog flap. If he’s a small dog then I would use a puppy pen to confine him so he can’t pee up the chair. Neutering may not make the slightest bit of difference.
How late at night does he go out? How early are you up? Is he telling you you’re leaving him too long?!

He uses the pet flap in the day ,I don’t understand why he can’t use it at night

It's dark with different noises and smells at night. Probably more scary for him to be out there alone.

Dogs are as individual as we are. Some dogs hate the rain, dark or other things. Something might have spooked him outside in the dark so now he associates that with it.

It's quite unsettling being rehomed. You almost have to go back to puppy-level basics especially with things like toileting.

Outside every few hours, treat when they wee.
Definitely outside just before bed for a wee.
And first thing in the morning.

Even when the back door is open ..still take him out for a wee? ..it’s not happening in the day.just at night

Yes, although it might seem logical to you that he should just understand, he's clearly not getting it.

You need to go back to basics with training, patience and lots of praise and treats.

For what it's worth, my dog wouldn't go out at night in the garden by himself. He'd be scared.

It had rained in the night ,he’s weed in 3 places ,my house stinks..I used puppy pads and a huge penned in area with my other dog at night ,untill I knew she wouldn’t wee in the house.but this dog can jump the gate so I’ve no way to pen him in as such ,plus our house is open plan downstairs and the pet flap leads from conservatory to garden.i just don’t know what to do

You need to go straight back to basics as PP said. Treat as if he is a puppy and doesn't understand what to do. Do not use puppy pads as the dog is confused enough to know when and where he can toilet. Also I don't think you should rely on the dog flap as you really need to teach him what you want.

Assume dog is not toilet trained. In the day take out and praise to reinforce how good they are going out to toilet. Then late at night take them out and then again very early in the morning. Yes that may mean getting up for a few hours before you usually do.

Get a camera/baby monitor so you can hear him stir and run down to let him out and praise or sleep near by so it's easy to get to him before he needs to pee.

A dog that isn't house trained needs to be treated like a puppy until he understands to toilet outside or wake you if he needs to (and maybe he isn't used to waking people hence using a baby monitor so you can see what is happening).

You need to stay close. Be there to take him out if he wakes in the night. Taking him out when he needs to go teaches him that that’s where he needs to go.

Once you've cleaned where there has been wee, wipe it over with something like citrus-scented Flash wipes. It's what I used to do after my dog had accidents when he was a puppy. Dogs aren't keen on citrus smell so my dog wasn't drawn back to the same place and prompted to wee by the smell.

You need an enzyme cleaner. That’ll kill the smell. But you won’t win this unless you actively toilet train.

Ok .back to basics ..I can’t even remember what I did with my other dog.she picked it up quick once she was out of her pen area.i will get the flash wipes .im using biological washing liquid and the special petspray from tesco
