Don't know if this has been mentioned before but it came up on another dog forum I'm on so thought I'd pass it on.

The wisdom of allowing dogs to run through crop fields apart, dogs can get nasty blisters from running through fields of Rape seed.

I have no idea if it's caused by the plant itself or what's sprayed on it.

Very helpful - thanks. We have borders of rape growing alongside the forest land where I live - just come out, so I will keep ddog out of it.

I think I may be on the same forum. The blisters on the dog I saw were just awful and horribly close to the eyes. On another posting, someone's dog got her harness caught while running through a field of rape - it's got really horrible, fibrous, tough and twiny roots - and it took 4 hours to find her. During which she got very nastily burnt and needed emergency vet treatment.

Personally I question the wisdom of ever allowing dogs to run through crop fields since it's not an activity that's good for dogs or crops but rape seed is particularly nasty.

Yes, it does sound like the same forum Enid with the one round the eyes, very nasty.

you should never let a dog run through a crop field.
even if it's 'just' grass - that's feed for the livestock during the winter.

Yes, I can't imagine it's something I would let my dog do but people do clearly, which is why I posted this.

I don't think they like the smell either...we have a path that goes through a field of oilseed rape and since it's started flowering our dog hates it and doesnt want to walk there.

I think it's something to do with being related to mustard type plants, so almost like a chemical burn.
I saw some poor pupper with blisters on its ears and sore swollen raw eyelids.

Allowing dogs to run loose in crops regardless of type can cause injury. Barley awns can get in a damage eyes, both wheat and barley are sharp.
Aside from the fact that the dog is destroying valuable crop belonging to the farmer.
