Surely this is nonsense

I am almost sure nothing will come of this but ..... I was walking my 11 month old dog on the beach today playing with him off lead when I could see a large dog approaching ( running away from owner who was chasing and shouting on it to come back) my dog started towards him to play but I called him back before he started running and put him on lead. Other dog ran right up to him and was sniffing and bouncing around him at which point my dog joined in the fun and starting jumping and also barked ( he is very friendly and loves to play). Crazy owner reaches me and I was expecting an apology but instead starts shouting about my dog being dangerous, I quite calmly explained that my dog is on a lead and is in no way at fault or dangerous, cue bark from tail wagging pup. This seemed to light a touch paper she then flew off handle and accused me of having dangerous breed dog out of control and that she was going to report him to police to be impounded and it would be up to me to show papers to show he is not one (no papers). Would not usually worry me but she then followed me to car park and wrote down my reg and was obvious about it. Should I be at all worried or will police also think lady is crazy ?

What breed is your dog?

The incident described above wouldn't fall under a Section 3 DDA, dog dangerously out of control
If your dog is a banned breed, or could be typed as a pitbull (for example a staffue cross) then the police could potentially seize as a Section 1 DD.

it would be up to me to show papers to show he is not one (no papers)

Assuming you are in the UK, papers (whatever they are meant to be) are not relevant. Banned breed types include all dogs that fit the same physical form as those breeds, regardless of papers showing they are another breed etc.

Assuming your dog doesn't look exactly like a Japanese Tosa (or other banned types) you will be fine.

Woman sounds batshit. Police will think she is batshit too.

I guess the only question is, do you have a dangerous breed dog? If not then just write it off as bat shit behaviour.

So a woman with an out of control dog accuses you of having a dangerous dog?? Shock she’s an idiot. If the police do get in touch be sure to report her total lack of control over her dog.

Nesssie · 09/04/2019 10:23

It is important here that your dog does not fit the characteristics of a pitbull type, or any of the other 3 banned breeds - you can pm me a photo and I can tell you if you like, as I am experienced with typing DDs.

If your dog does fit these characteristics then, as missbattenburg said, papers showing your dog is a sbtxlab (for example) means absolutely nothing. You dog will be seized and you'll have to apply for exemption.

No i def do not have a dangerous breed dog and anyone looking at him would know that - I was more worried that she seemed comvinced I would need to prove this and seemed to know what she was yelling about I started to doubt myself - this is him and as you can see makes whole idea seem ridiculous -

Surely this is nonsense

The woman sounds nuts.

My only concern would be if you have a bull breed who could be mistaken for a pit bull type - it's quite literally done with a tape measure. There was even a case of a staffy working as a police sniffer dog who was 'typed' and put down.

I don't think you have anything to worry about with regards to behaviour, but if the breed became an issue then you absolutely must contact Trevor Cooper at Dog Law who is a specialist and has an excellent reputation.

Cross posted.

The woman is definitely nuts and the police will have a giggle at her expense when they see your dog. You've got nothing to worry about.

I can confirm that your dog definitely is not classed as one of the 4 banned breeds!

So the only section that would apply is Section 3, and that is for dog attacks (on people or assistance dogs) or serious fear of injury.

As your dog was on a lead and the other dog was not at the point when the dogs met, then you will not be at fault.

Final ruling - The woman is crazy. Your dog is cute.

What a gorgeous dog! What breed? The woman was clearly a lunatic! I wouldn't worry

Your dog looks adorable.
Some dog owners are more 'precious' than others and don't seem/want to understand dog body language.
Her dog approached yours off lead, she's in the wrong.

I live in rural Gloucestershire and nowhere near a beach OP otherwise I would have thought you were near me, as this village is filled with batshit dog owners Grin

Don't give it a second thought.... she was the one not controlling her dog and I'm pretty sure the Police aren't going to impound your fluff ball of a dog. He's absolutely gorgeous!!

I actually think she will she took down the car reg (had notebook in her pocket) let’s see if they do turn up - will post back if they do and if they wet themselves laughing which I now know is the correct response - anyone in Tyne and Wear beware of crazy lady with German Shepherd type out of control dog

Hopefully they won’t as what a waste of police time - even if she does report it maybe they will just file it and leave it
