The doghouse

My girl waited for my baby to come home and then passed away :(

As title really - my wonderful, stubborn, clownish, beatiful Briard died a couple of days after I finally brought DD back from the hospital. I had a straight forward birth but readmitted a few days later for sepsis. The initial meeting between my DD and dear dog was fab as I’d expected, just a polite, pleased wag and a lick. Two days later DH said she seemed quiet, I checked and she was very pale so straight to vets. Long story short, my dog who was happy and apparently healthy on Monday evening was never woken up from surgery on Tuesday afternoon due to multiple tumours over liver and spleen and a major abdominal bleed resulting.

I’m just so, so sad. She was my rock, I’d had her since before even meeting my husband and I had hoped my DD would have vague memories of a large hairy hound following her around the house. She was such a calm, gentle dog, ideal to have around small children. I even took her on holiday to Wales a while ago and left DH at home alone. Now I’m at home alone with a 9wo baby for company as DH usually works away from home during the week and it makes the house seem so empty.

There’s no other point to this thread really, just wanted to share. As an aside, I know puppies are hard work but this is my first baby. What age would people suggest waiting until before introducing a new puppy to the fold? TIA

I'm sorry for your loss, that must have been a real shock for you.

As to your puppy question, I'm inclined to suggest that you wait til your baby is potty training, so that keeping chewable/dangerous things "out of reach" (for baby or puppy) is second nature, along with puddles and more solid accidents on your floors. Puppies are indeed hard work, so are toddlers, and in very similar ways.

What a beautiful dog and I’m not ashamed to say I sobbed reading this. I would say leave a little while before getting a pup though, I’ve done toddlers and pups. My new pup is 6 months and he exhausts me without a baby to manage also. Plus he’s bouncy! Give it a couple of years then find your babies best friend x

Oh OP. I am sorry for your loss. I lost a beloved cat during pregnancy with my second, also cancer. You're not just griving your DDog, but all the hoes you had for your child's memories of her. I'm so sorry.

So sorry for your loss.

I'm not an expert but i have had several pups and i'd probably recommend getting an older dog with a baby around.

Puppies can be socialised to be good with small humans but that takes time and their behaviour can be erratic/unpredictable to start with.

Older dogs can be a lot more mellow. If you can rehome a dog from a home with small children, even better.

Oh I’m so sorry for your loss, & congratulations. Around a year ago we introduced an 18 month old Dalmatian to our family, my son was 13 weeks old at the time. It was chaotic initially while we established a new routine but she’s fitted in perfectly (so much so I added another dog in December) and they absolutely adore each other. DS goes running up to them when we get home from nursery to give them kisses and pats through the gate and they seem to genuinely enjoy each other’s company. Adding the dog during my maternity leave was a real lifesaver and I enjoyed having the company of a dog and someone to walk and force us out the house more. Have added a few of my favourite photos of the two of them from the early days just because they make my heart happy

If you are confident with your baby, and confident with puppies, then do it now. You are stuck home to an extent anyway, so make the most of it.

I am so sorry for your loss.

This next bit will out me to anyone who knows me. We had an old Lab who reached the end (couldn’t get up anymore, despite multiple medications, was having vestibular episodes, quality of life gone) when I was 37 weeks pregnant with DC2, so I booked the appointment to say goodbye for the next day, wracked with guilt feeling like I was doing it for my convenience with a new baby coming etc. Then the baby decided to arrive that night and I had to delay the euthanasia. Cue more guilt, more prepping of DC1 until I could get her to the vet a few days later.

I was then home alone with a baby and hated the silence in the house all day so we got a puppy. Puppy and DC2 share a birthday. So, I had an 8 week old baby and an 8 week old puppy. It was hard work, but I don’t regret the timing. I had the puppy house trained and basic obedience in place by 12 weeks, so well before crawling baby point. Puppies and toddlers are a bad combination, as toddler doesn’t understand not to interfere with the puppy and are more likely to get knocked over etc. Otherwise, I felt it would be waiting until DC2 was school age, and by that point, we probably wouldn’t have got another dog.

Long winded way of saying that if you can face it, have an easy baby and are confident with training, do it now, before you are back at work (assuming you are going back to work). There are pros and cons to getting a dog with any age of child, you just have to work out what is best for you.

Gorgeous girlie. I echo what others have said in that if you feel confident with your baby then get a dog now as you are home. X

I am so sorry to hear this Jabby. I can't imagine how painful this must be for you. I agree with the others, you'll never replace her but you do not have to wait a certain amount of time before welcoming a new hairy friend into your family. Sometimes it is the only way to help heal. xx
