Help - dog ate m and ms

My six month old cavachon has just eaten two bags of m&ms. She took them from my handbag... anyone know what to expect? Should I bring her to a vet?

There are websites on line which show the toxicity of chocolate in comparison to the weight of your dog.

As above poster said and also check out early signs of toxicity in dogs.
If your dog starts displaying any of these symptoms then she will need to see a vet.

If it’s of any consolation my dog has managed to steal countless chocolate bars and has survived but I monitored her very closely. She’s even eaten chocolate coated raisins 🙄 Double whammy!

My chihuahua has eaten some crap and still ok. She once ate a boozy mince pie at xmas and a chocolate name place bar. She was looked like shit. Like a massive hangover. But she was ok. Don't feel too bad. Mine just managed to find things. Chewing gum in my bag and a cheeseburger. She ran behind a cupboard to eat this. Again, she looked yuk but survived. I fed her grapes once, for quite some time, until someone told me they're poisonous. I felt like such an irresponsible owner but I genuinely didn't know. I hope your dog will be ok.

I have a beagle. He ate 3 Easter eggs one day last week. Last year he ate a 10 inch triple tiered chocolate cake I had lovingly made for DS 1 birthday. On Christmas Eve he ate 11 Tesco luxury mini mince pies. He has survived all of the above. I would say don't panic; watch for signs of effect full the chocolate..If you are worried go yo emergency vet and they will make him throw up. And give you a big bill.

These things happen sometimes, people make mistakes. My puppy got underneath the Christmas tree her first Christmas and unwrapped and ate a box of Cadbury milk tray. I didn't even consider that she would sniff them out, it didn't cross my mind. Didn't even realise what she had done to start with, she was looking very sorry for herself and got a bit lethargic and then started vomiting. I took her to the emergency vet at about midnight the night before Christmas Eve, cost a fortune. Luckily they didn't have to do anything, just monitored her for a bit, she was fine, and she was only small so it was quite a lot of chocolate for her size. Ignore anyone who says anything negative, you're a good dog parent worrying about them and asking for advice, a bad owner would just leave them to it. Phone the vet and ask their advice, explain how much they have eaten and they will be able to advise whether they need to see them urgently.

If you haven't had a beagle you have never suffered the full how much crap can I steal experience. And we do actually try to put everything out of reach...He opens cupboards, gets things off high shelves.. Hope your dog is ok OP and feel your pain

Thanks everyone. Feeling reassured now. She's chilling in her usual spot on the chair. Looks a bit sorry for herself..
I know I shouldn't, but I laughed at some of the dog stories here..

because my dog stole and ate two StickleBricks today so her poop should look very pretty tomorrow 🙄

Oh bless her she does look a bit sorry for herself! Keep an eye on her poop tomorrow just in case it gives her a dodgy tummy then it might be wise to stick her on some bland food for a day or two.

My tiny chihuahua ate half a giant Easter egg. The vet said to watch her but sadly she became sick. She went to out of hours vet. They made her sick then I had to give her syringes of charcoal every hour for 12 hours. She was only 2 1/2 kg and had eaten enough to kill her from what she brought up.

My lab, who is usually very untypically lab-like and fussy about his food, ate some chocolate biscuits I’d accidentally left out. The vet said if he’d poisoned himself he’d have kept being sick. Instead he shat his away around my house. One big vets bill and a new rug later I have learned that he’s not always fussy.

No flaming from me. Ddog has eaten a Lindt dor advent calendar and an entire box of chocolate brownies. Both these meant trips to the vet at £140 per time. Subsequent encounters with Maltese's and a cup of hot chocolate we dealt with at home having checked out the dog to choc ratio.
The photo shows what I am up against though in this instance it was only a wrapper he got hold of.. DS has scoffed the chocolate!

There's very little chocolate so if normal single serving bags I suspect that they are going to be fine. My ddog ate a box of Thornton's under my DD's bed destined for me on Mother's Day and the vet said don't worry. Dark good quality chocolate is the dangerous kind and depends on the weight of the dog too

My dog once ate 2 family size bars of dairy milk including the wrappers. As others have said these things happen, hopefully your ddog will not suffer any ill effects

Hi,

She's fine, slightly runny poo but other than that she is her usual self..
It's like having a toddler again trying to remember to leave everything out of reach!

Glad she's ok, OP. It does worry you, tho I'm a lot more blase than I used to be....Glad nobody flamed you either. People are too quick to flame on MN. Hope Ddog behaves this weekend for you.
