Dog bite- do I need to get a jab?

My 10 year old ddog has bitten me, puncturing the skin and causing quite a deep wound. She has an injury on her leg causing her to have stitches and as I was cleaning her wound, which I have done for the past 10 days without issue I must have accidentally hurt her and she snapped and bit me. She has never reacted like this before so am not worried about her biting but the bite itself is pretty deep. Advice online is quite conflicting, do I need a jab??

Yes, I think you do, or possibly pre-emptive antibiotics. Sounds like an A&E job to me.

I would ask for medical advice IRL certainly.

Ah thanks, I thought so but didn't want to over react. It is pretty painful and ddog is looking very sorry for herself as I screeched my head off !

You need a tetanus if you haven’t had one in last few years or completed course, and possible antibiotics, not always needed for dog bites vs cat bites

From recent experience, if a dog bite has broken your skin, you need a tetanus top up within 12 hours.

If it happens to be on a finger with rings on, get the ring off before you need to get it cut off.

My DD was bitten by a dog whilst out running (owner oblivious, dog out of control but that’s another story). It was a Saturday. She rang 111, was sent to A&E and prescribed antibiotics (she was up to date with tetanus). I thought they’d tell her to wait and see if the bite got infected (overuse of antibiotics etc) but apparently that’s the best course. If I were you I’d just see my GP.

10 year old dog probably has some dodgy teeth too - unless she's very recently had a dental.

You'll need antibiotics and it cleaned out.

They might use steri strips to partly close it but won't close it completely as there needs to be an escape route for any infection.

Providing you had tetanus shots as a child then you don't need them now - medical advice has recently changed to lifelong protection.

I know this because I was bitten recently.
