Oh my Lord , we’ve got a Dalmatian !

Last month , we lost our lovely greyhound to heart failure . We’d expected it for the last 8 months , so whilst not exactly a shock , we were and are still devastated . However our boy hound was distraught . He’s never been alone , and he just doesn’t know what to do himself, crying and being a shadow of himself . We went to our RGT and several others to try and find a cat friendly hound ( having been adopted by an abandoned cat who’s moved himself in ) but to no avail . And then last week , our neighbour told us his sister was rehoming her dog , who had lived with cats and kids but needed more room and exercise than she could give. I agree to a visit to see her .

On Friday afternoon she arrives for her visit . She hasn’t left yet , and it looks very much like she’s now one of the family ....

I’ve done as much research as I can , asked my vet for advice , as we’ve always been hound owners rather than anything else , and so far, so good . But is there anything I need to know , other than the lots and lots of exercise ?

You definitely need to know that on Mumsnet you must always post a picture of your pet! It’s the law!

Aww she's nice. You don't see many Dalmatians these days do you? How old is she? Has your boy taken to her

Greyhound boy is pleased , he’s been a lot less clingy , so I’m hoping it’ll be ok . She’s only 4 , so old enough to behave ! But my god , she’s rolled in EVERYTHING

Oh lovely dog, hardly ever see a dalmatian these days, they make me smile. Really glad your boy has a new companion.

Congratulations! Maisie & Marley think a Dalmatian is a great choice! Love ours to bits-they’re bonkers but such loving amusing characters ❤️

I’m genuinely laughing that you were looking for a greyhound and have ended up with a Dalmatian... it’s like the exact opposite. Grin

Are you familiar with the book all dogs have ADHD? I’ve always thought they must have had dalmatians...

Molly also thinks you’ve made a great choice Smile

Not sure how much your hound sheds, but Dalmatians shed a lot, all year round. They are great fun though, total clowns and she makes us laugh every day. Very vocal as you’ve already found, selective deafness, a tail that never stops wagging and a magnet for attention when out and about. Molly is our second Dalmatian and I can’t imagine having any other breed

Awwwww she's lovely. So glad your grey has a new companion. I think Dalmatians look quite houndy if you know what I mean.

Have a read up on Hyperuricosuria. Dalmatian Welfare also have a page about the condition that's worth reading.

Problems related to the formation of stones are less common in female dalmatians but still something to be aware of.
