We thought she had a touch of arthritis but found out today it’s bone cancer. Sadly nothing can be done and she will have to be pts. We’re devastated. She is the most lovely, gentle, beautiful dog and only 5yo.

We’ll keep her at home for a couple of days to say goodbye and the vet will come to the house. She’s currently on morphine so a bit out of it. We’re going to sleep downstairs with her for the next couple of nights and give her whatever treats she wants.

It hurts so much and more so because not everyone understands. Can only really talk about it here.

Poor dh had to go to work upset and dd is inconsolable.

I’m kind of in shock too. I’m looking at her and trying to let it sink in that she’ll be gone in a couple of days.

I'm so sorry. I've lost two dogs to cancer, and completely understand what you're feeling. If it's any small comfort, your DDog has no idea, and you're doing everything you possibly can to make her last days as happy as all the other days she's shared with you. Flowers

Thank you all. It’s truly shit. The awful price you pay for the years of love, fun and comfort they give you.
There’s no consoling sure there’s not? It’s just shit and that’s it.

I’m trying to take comfort knowing she has no idea and she’ll just drift off to sleep. It’s little comfort but something all the same.

We lost our dog just over 2 weeks ago. The whole family was devastated. We had an awful few days of crying all the time but it does get better although it really feels like it won't. I can talk about her now without crying although it still feels sad. There are lots of people who don't understand but lots of people have been lovely too. Take care x

I'm so sorry to hear this. There's nothing worse. I hope your ddog gets a peaceful ending and you can all find peace too. It took me a good few months when we had our darling lab PTS a few years back, and she was 13. It just felt like losing part of me. Take care of each other Flowers

She’s a Rottweiler. A big softie and such a happy girl. She has a cheeky look about her when she’s giddy. She’s loving and lovable and a bit of a slobberer Grin She loves playing hide and seek with my dd. Such an awful shame Sad

So sorry to hear this - she sounds such a lovely dog. We lost our beautiful old girl suddenly last January and still miss her terribly - it helped a little that we let her go at home where she was happiest. Sending lots of love Flowers

Again sending lots of love, totally understand and I still miss my gorgeous boy who was pts 2 years ago. It really is a very peaceful way to go. Have you thought about what you are going to do. Mine was unexpected so wasn't prepared to think of cremation burial etc but I wish I had decided beforehand what I wanted.

Thank you everyone and sorry for all your losses too Flowers

We will have her cremated so she can come with us if we move from here which is likely in the future. We have our other ddog buried in the garden and we regret not having her ashes.

We’re just going to bring a mattress down and camp out in the sitting room with her. She loves the tv so we’ll put on a movie. We can’t really play with her because she’s woozy from the morphine and playing would risk a fracture according to vet but she can have whatever treats she wants.

We’ll love on her so much and always be grateful, no matter how painful this time is, to have shared our lives with her.

I’m going to sign off now but thank you all so much for being here. I really needed people who understood Flowers

We lost a dog to cancer a while back. It wasn't discovered until too late. He suddenly became unwell, a tummy bug had run through all our dogs at the time but he wasn't recovering. Vet investigated and it was inoperable tumors compromising primary organs. As he'd not eaten or had bowel movements for 24 hours he was weak and unable to move, he'd have had to get to a state of wellness for surgery, there would have been chemo, and the prognosis wasn't good so we didn't want to put him through that. We just sat with him for a couple of hours in a room at the vets. The lovely staff kept bringing us boxes of tissues, offering cups of tea. Heartbreaking.

You may not want to do this, but we found that over the days/weeks/ months afterward whenever we would say "remember how he used to...", we wrote it down on little slips of paper. We keep them in a tin with his ashes (we always choose to keep ashes). As it was such a sudden loss we still haven't scattered the ashes.

The emotional impact of losing these far too temporary bright lights in the family can't be underestimated. My heart goes out to you and your family.

THISISTHELASTSTRAW. Ok first of all I don't have a dog but a cat. He was put to sleep just this week so for me it is still very real and very raw. It was around 2.5 weeks ago that we noticed that he wasn't himself, not eating or being social just wanting to sleep all the time. Initially the vet thought a bit of constipation, great easily sorted but just to do some bloods and x-rays just in case. It turned out that he had a tumour and the vets done everything they could for him but he just became weak and in the end he wasn't the cat he was in his prime and despite our best efforts we had to have him pts.

I was in tears in the vets and have been on the verge of tears in work, just about holding it together. He is going to be cremated. I have packed all his bowls and litter tray and bed away. It just doesn't feel real that my best friend of 13 years has gone.

So sorry to hear about your dog. Hopefully in time we will both be able to focus on the good times that we had together with our pets.

Might seem a bit random, but where did you get her from? Just if you’ve had her straight from the breeder, you’ll want to let them know at some point. There’s a bit of an issue with bone cancer and rotties and they should want to know it’s happened so young in their lines.

I still miss mine, he was PTS in December at 6 yrs old...(not cancer) partly the age he was has really got to me, also - he had such a huge personality, they’re definitely characters.

And yes, it’s fine for them, they just fall asleep Flowers

Oh, I am so very sorry. We went through it with our beautiful Springer four years ago - she developed a limp, vet said arthritis, anti-inflammatories didn't help much and an x-ray revealed what turned out to be a very aggressive bone cancer in both her shoulder blades. We had a weekend to say goodbye to her and it was heartbreaking, but she slipped away so peacefully in the end and just relaxed as the pain left her.

Thinking of you and your sweet girl. Flowers

Thank you everyone. I’m absolutely lost. We nursed her for two days and finally said goodbye at home today. It was peaceful for her. Beyond devastated. The pain is physical isn’t it? Feel like I’ve been punched in the throat. Almost as hard was comforting dd and dh through their grief.

Thank you all for your personal stories and kind words. I’m very sorry for your losses Flowers

Aw op. I've tears in my eyes for you and your beautiful girl. I'm so sorry for your loss. Lost my ddog 4 years ago, still miss her.
I hope you're ok, how heartbreaking.
I actually clicked on this thread as I thought you were my friend. She decided today to put her gorgeous 5 year old collie to sleep. He's suffered with joint and back problems all his life and the pain is too much for him.
The hardest but kindest decision we ever make as a pet owner is when to say goodbye.
Knowing it's the right decision for your best friend doesn't make it any easier.
My condolences and hugs to you x
