Dog sitter fed dog tinned food that has been open for 2 weeks

Ugh, I feel sick on the dog's behalf.

I opened a tin of dog food about 2 weeks ago. Dog didn't like it, so it sat in the cupboard and I forgot about it (yes, I know that's gross, and my slovenly ways will be amended after this, that's for sure).

Forgot about it until today, that is, when I got a message from the dog sitter that she has fed the dog - using food from that tin...

What do I do?! Apparently she has eaten it, or at least was eating it when the dog sitter left.

Argh. I'm so cross with myself for leaving it in the cupboard, but it's only me at home so I know what's ok to use/not use and I forgot about this.

If it doesn't agree with her she'll puke it back up.

I'm meant to be going out tonight (and tomorrow night). Now I'm worried I'm going to come home to a house full of dog vomit. Should I cancel my night out?!

My dog will happily eat 2 week old chips and peas outside the chippy if I don’t spot her first, don’t worry about your dog😁

Is your dog's stomach normally delicate?

Unless it was obviously off, stinking the house out or actually mouldy, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Mine (working cockers) have a middling constitution, not up to PILs cast iron stomached retriever's standard, they would have the squirts after something properly rank, eat grass and vom occasionally. They'd be fine with slightly aged tinned food.

Presumably it wasn't visibly off or the sitter wouldn't have fed it. DDog has eaten all sorts off the pavement and has yet to fall ill - can't remember the last time he threw up.

What's done is done - next time I'd leave the right food out on the worktop so the sitter doesn't have to go hunting and you can be certain the right food will be fed.

I would have put the half tin in the fridge not a cupboard.

Aside from that point - dog obviously reckoned it had improved with two weeks maturation, given that you said he didn't like it two weeks ago. 😂

My ddog ate an entire flip flop with no ill effects...
Ddog9 has eaten chocolate her entire life without being ill - have banned it since all scare mongering stats!
My childhood ddogs had a Kit Kat every day for years and years.
And one lived to be nearly 21!!
Ddogs guts are vastly underrated ime.

Thanks for all the replies. She is fine so far (and the tin has been binned!). It didn’t smell at all, amazingly. Makes you wonder what is actually in that stuff?!

Re the flip flop - you were lucky. But hey, if a bit of the flip-flop had caused an obstruction its only a £1500 vet bill or a dead dog

Re the chocolate: It is not scare mongering, chocolate is toxic to dogs, fact. It is the theobromide (i think but too lazy too google) that can cause renal failure, neurological effects, seizures or death. However a dog has to ingest a fair amount of cocoa to be affected, dependant upon the size of the dog and the quality of chocolate! So the odd titbit of chocolate will do no harm but if they steel a whole bar of green and blacks 70% cocoa from the dresser its a trip to the vets

OP i daresay your dog will be fine, i would imagine you'll be dealing with the fallout round about now if it has caused an issue. Still find it hard to believe it didnt stink to high heaven though!

Before I worked out he was opening cupboards doors he was regularly eating share size packets of buttons etc. I reckon he has built up a tolerance to it now. I feed him malteasers and chocolate fingers as snacks. He was a street dog so has a cast iron stomach.

20 years ago I had a toy sized dog eat an entire gift box of chocolate on Christmas day that had been unwisely left on the floor. She was fine!

Perhaps some dogs just have a higher natural tolerance to theobromine?
