Dog just ate a tennis ball

Aarrgh, 8 month old puppy has just demolished a whole tennis ball. She is a lurcher and so far seems to have quite a strong stomach. There are just a few bits of rubber and felt left. Should I go to the vets asap??

Yes vets now. If she has eaten it within last hoir or so she can be made to vomit. Otherwise she could be in trouble

I would definitely phone them and get their advice. I say that after my dog had to have emergency surgery to remove an obstruction.

It takes a fair bit for me to go to the vet, but yes I'd be straight down there in such circumstances

yes vets. If it has to be removed easier to do it before it hits the intestines

Vets - it could cause a blockage. Much easier for her to vomit it up than have to undergo surgery.

Yes, get to a vets asap. Your clinic will have their out of hours partner's details on their answering machine if they're closed.

thank you! home now and she is fine after copious vomiting. they said the bits were so tiny she probably would've been ok but obviously better to be on the safe side. thanks for all replying so quickly.

I don't use tennis balls anymore, or foamy rubber type dog balls, mine have chewed up so many. I only use heavy duty rubber type dog toys or hard plastic types.

Yay! So pleased she is ok and well done for getting her seen promptly. That was an expensive tennis ball !

My dog thinks tennis balls are the best things IN THE WORLD but he isn't allowed them as he destroys them in seconds.

Haha, yes, having googled it now seems like letting her have a tennis ball was definitely a rookie mistake. Lesson learnt. I think the most traumatic thing for her (and me) was the injection they gave - she properly screamed!

LEM mine isn’t allowed them either but it doesn’t stop the bloody cowbag from stealing them when on walks and trying to eat the sodding things.

FWIW Chuck It Ultra Balls are the same size as tennis balls but indestructible. Ball obsessed DDog can destroy a tennis ball in under ten minutes but has yet to put even a dent in a chuck it ball.

I use chuckit ultra balls as well. For bigger dogs they do one that's much larger than a standard tennis ball.
