Continuing the talk about training commands at the end of the last thread.

BiteyDog gets so wound up if he doesn't get it right and runs through all the commands he knows whilst barking at me. I am so glad I don't understand what he is saying as I am sure it isn't complementary

SquirrelDog is exactly like BiteyDog. We are STILL trying to master rolling over (I say ‘we’, I already know how to roll over...

The yogurt pots I think are to teach them that you want them to touch the scent - get 2 big yoghurt pots, cut a hole in the bottom of one and put it inside the other, with a scent cloth in between (so they can smell it, but not pull it out). Wave yoghurt pots at dog. If he puts his nose inside, he gets a delicious treat. Eventually you can start saying ‘find it’ or whatever. You can also use it to teach a better alert - gradually increase how long they have to hold their nose in the pot to get the treat.

(There’s probably all sorts wrong with that explanation...I expect there’s a better one on the ScentWork Facebook page.)

That sounds like a good plan. It does feel like we have missed some basic steps. We missed one week but also I think it's because we have more experienced dogs in the class.

steppedog gets so excited when doing sets of commands that he is quivering all over and tryign anything to get his treat.

I tried doing sit - down - sit earlier, as he doesn't seem to get the idea of repeating/goign back a step.

He did - sit - down - roll over -down, paw (from lying down) until I stepped back and waited, and he FINALLY went back to sit!

He got it after a bit though. Now I have to try and do sit-stand.

They are so funny aren't they. I enjoy teaching him new commands and tricks much more now he is as adult than when he was younger. I think it's because I can read him better and he enjoys it because he runs down the corridor all excited when he sees me heading into the room where we do the tricks with my tub of treats in my hand

DH is away tonight and I think this is the first time that's happened since we got BiteyDog. What's the betting that he spends all night getting up to look to see if DH has magically snuck back in .

As predicted BiteyDog spent most of the night looking for DH. I am very tired. DH is going to get the biggest greeting ever when he gets home

This week SquirrelDog is up at 2am. I don’t know if he’s always up at that time, and for some reason I’m suddenly aware of it, or if it’s new.

BiteyDog often does a circuit of the bedroom around 3am. It's a good job I love him because my sleep has been shit since we got him

4 days to go before we can start reintroducing off lead walking. I can wait . BiteyDog doesn't really enjoy street on lead walks and I don't either.

BastardPup was fine on his three day sleepover with his daycare lady, but very pleased to see us when we got back. We missed him loads. Good job he is coming on our next two holidays with us.

am I horrible?

I have 2 friends who liek to dog walk with me. Trouble is, I don't want to.

One of them has a dog, and she and steppedog play really well together and steppedog gets worn out (this is good) but even so....

They both wanted to join up for a walk over half term, but that would have meant the other friend (no dog) would have brought kids too. (and it would be later in the day, and my kids would have to be dragged out to join in)

I go out early and I am back at my desk by 10, having changed and made a cup of tea. With both friends we can't head out til 9, then it takes longer they walk slower and then we have a cup of tea afterwards, and the whole morning is gone.

Not only that but both are at having life stages where I am doing more supporting, and so it is less fun for me I think (grief that sounds selfish)

and lastly, my dog walking time is my head space, thinking, writing emails, ranting about things I can't rant about in real life.

So I sort of didn't get back to them, and have meetings I need to be at

am I a bad person?

Well if you are then I am worse as I only like walking BiteyDog on my own (apart from when DH comes as well).

Honestly I give up with my dog. I am sure he's on a mission to send me over the edge with worry.

A couple of days ago we were doing some scent training. Only I didn't see that I had dropped a piece of sock which still had sticky tape attached. Guess who eats it .

Now I know my sensible head said it would pass through as it was small but given we nearly lost him when he ate a rag my irrational head had me checking his poo over the past two days . I can now rest in peace

Oh BiteyDog.

SquirrelDog and I had a fun 1-1 training session yesterday. He went on the wobble board and learnt to jump over my outstretched leg. Then he stuck his nose in his trainer’s coffee. Idiot.

Oh ffs. BastardPup has another stomach upset. Loose poo last night and then had a poo accident overnight in his crate - first time this has ever happened. He went to daycare today and was ok - one normal poo, one loose poo. Then came home and puked 🤢. Since then he has had another v loose poo and an enormous wet fart.

DH is out and I am knackered. Every time he gets up I am up in seconds in case he needs to go out.

I have been lucky with BiteyDog as he always tells me he needs to go when he has an upset stomach although I know to open the door quickly.

Do you think he has eaten anything bad at daycare?

SquirrelDog loves both coffee and tea, and has been known to knock into me when I have a mug in my hand and then enthusiastically ‘clean up’ whatever spills.

I fell off the other thread, as it's been hectic at home.

So Mrs dog is out and about, we have took her field and she is just amazing and loves it, no running off, just running to fetch her ball and to not bring it back to me

One thing she won't do is wee or poo yet but I know that will come in time, she does it in the garden when we get back.

Ah yes I remember the dropping of the ball and THEN running back to me. I wonder if he thought I should now go get the ball. Fortunately after a lot of stand offs he brings the ball back .

Is it bad that I enjoyed work today because BiteyDog went to daycare and I didn't have a dog staring at me. Apparently he didn't like the fact that he was on the lead but I told him it's because he's daft and clumsy

I odn't get the stare, I get the - I'll just curl up very close to your feet, so I am in the way and you don;t forget I'm here.
or - I'll sit close and pretend to be asleep, but let out dramatic sighs regularly
