Why do people still NOT microchip their dog?

A poor dog was dognapped right under the nose of the owner taking him for a walk yesterday in our local town. Thugs jumped out of a van and grabbed it in full daylight!
The owners are now trying to flood FB with info on the dog and they keep saying that it's spayed but NOT MICROCHIPPED.
Oh and also the dog lost it's collar.
Why, oh why, do owners never microchip? It doesn't cost that much and I thought it was the law now?
Hope they find the poor dog soon.

I guess unless there is a good medical reason it's probably down to money.

It is law in the UK now, without a good medical reason they could face up to a £500 fine for the dog not being chipped if and when they do find them. Some fines have gone higher than that in court.

If the dog was dog-napped though and is spayed, she will likely be dumped somewhere when the dognappers realise they can't breed from her. Just have to hope someone responsible finds her before the weather gets really bad. I'm guessing she's a desirable breed?

It's also law that a dog in a public space should have a collar and an ID tag. Albeit this would have been removed by dognappers, but if the dog had simply run off and a warden had found her then there would be more fines.

Around here people don't chip their dogs because they don't want to be held responsible when they stray or go sheep worrying.

Im wondering, was your friend walking their dog off lead? As much as i think dogs should run off lead im fields ONLY IF they have fantastic recall maybe this is a risk dog owners should be more available when not putting their dogs on lead when just walking them? Either way what a horrible thing to happen and i hope someone find her

It's the law to have your dog chipped and for it to wear an ID tag when out and about. I see loads of dogs off-lead on our local beach with no collar everyday, though. I have a feeling it's one of those things that's only an issue if the dog disappears or bites someone.

I meet dogs I know every day and they are not wearing a collar with an ID tag, all dogs who stick close to their owners so maybe it's no big deal ( though strictly speaking against the law).

Equally I have picked up plenty of lost dogs and have yet to find one wearing a tag. Everyone thinks it won't happen to them, but if your dog gets lost and has your number on his collar, there's a chance someone will find him and call you. If he doesn't have an ID tag he could end up in the council pound and you will be fined and have to pay to reclaim. To me it's a no brainer.
