Dogs ear?

Hi all! My 16 month old beagle seems to have some problem with one of his ears, it looks like it's got dirt or dried blood or something in it? I tried cleaning it out gently with cotton wool when he was asleep and it's come back a few days later. I just wondered if anyone knows what it is? He doesn't mind me touching his other ear but this one he jumps as soon as I do :-( please tell me if it's just dirty 😂 I've booked him in for the vet on Monday for a check up anyway!

It could be ear mites - easily treated by the vet.

We have him checked at the vets every month and they do his treatment for flea and worm so even though he has been itching his ear I haven't thought too much of it until this week when I noticed the discharge/weird gunk.
