First Puppy coming in the NY so a bit clueless. How did your first night/week actually go - and how would you have liked it to go in retrospect.

Ours was as expected, dh slept downstairs next to the crate for the first week or so setting an alarm and getting up regularly to let ddog out until he was settled and clean at night (pay back from when ds was a bf newborn Grin). ddog was ok as long as someone was there, dh's snoring seemed to comfort him!! After that we still had to get up very early for several weeks to make sure ddog got out before he needed to toilet (we never used puppy pads indoors).

Thanks, where did you put it’s cage- where did it sleep - we’re looking at a corner of the dinning room near the Patio doors as it’s probably the quietest room. Read some advice saying you coild start with it in your bedroom and move it when more settled. How did you cope with it being upset, whimpering throught the first nights?

DH slept on sofa next to puppy (was in a little puppy basket) for 3 nights, then we settled puppy in basket and carried trough to kitchen where we have a stair gate. Kept radio on low and something smelling of his mum next to him. We did use puppy mats which he was ok with but we did need to mop the floor every morning. He then went into a crate and now sleeps on our bed and loves it!

We had pup in a cosy, high sided cardboard box in the corner of our bedroom and took her out for a wee when she stirred. This lasted about 4-5 nights before pup decided of her own accord that she'd rather stay in her downstairs bed.

I kept my puppy next to my bed in his little bed for the first few weeks if I remember correct (Was 7 years ago now though). I was really worried about him being upset through the night so wanted him close. He was absolutely fine, didn't get at all and settled really well. I kept my hand down next to him for a wee while until be settled to sleep.

We had a large crate in the kitchen with a three sided cardboard box (containing a pillow) at one end to stop draughts. Also had a blanket over the top. Put newspaper in the other end for any accidents. Got her used to crate by placing her in it every time she fell asleep in the day, also fed her In it for positive association. At night left radio on low and I sat next to the crate for a while while she settled, if she cried I shushed her. Didn't rush down every time she cried as she had space to toilet if she needed to, but she actually stayed clean and dry. Had a few 5-6am wake ups initially but that extended to a more reasonable time quite quickly. Always left crate open during the day and she liked to take herself into it for naps.

Our puppy was fine to sleep in kitchen the entire night. The first week I let her out for pee, but she didn’t need to. I woke 5/6am to let her out for pee the first couple weeks. She never cried in the night. We put my shirt in with her that i wore when picking her up and I held all her siblings with it so their scent would be on. Covered front and top crate w towel. Left sides open for air circulation. She is now 9 months and always slept well.

We had ours in a crate next to our bed. We had him there for 3 weeks then moved him out to the dining room where he settled fine.
The first week or two we would take him out whenever he stirred. After a couple of weeks he was able to sleep straight through the night

No food or drink after tea time, let out every hour and slept in crate with a blanket on top. Never had whining at night time and puppies picked up house training very quickly. A treat after every toilet in the garden from day 1. We now have 2 huge dopey fluff balls who are still very laid back, placid and obedient.

We slept on the sofa with him in the crate with the door open and then gradually shut the door over a week. We then left him downstairs at night but set an alarm to let him out for a wee. The last week or so we stopped setting an alarm and he’s going from 10-6.30 at 13 weeks old.

My kids didn’t sleep through until they were 4 so this feels bliss 😂
