Wiping dog's bum ?

Sorry for the disgusting title but this whole subject is disgusting and sadSad

DDog is 14 and the last few days he's been really stinky, last night I was cuddling him and he smelled like poo so I checked him and he had big lumps of dried in poo all round his bum. I cleaned the area with baby wipes, and trimmed the hair short round there. He's a border terrier cross so has a wiry coat that doesn't need much grooming. Also gave him a bath so he's nice and clean.

He went into the garden and did a poo so I checked his bum and wiped it with baby wipes again and there was still poo there. I've never had anything like this with him before.

Has anyone else had this problem ? Is it just a part of him getting old and I'll have to wipe his bum every time now ?

Could it be that he can't get into the right position due to pain and therefore the poo is getting caught in his fur. Is the poo soft and sticking?

Maybe a check up at the vets to see if there is a health issue causing this.

Upset tum from too many xmas treats?

He doesn't get any Xmas treats as he has a sensitive tummy and has had Colitis in the past so he only gets dry complete food.

His poops are softer than usual and he had a tummy bug last week so I just put it down to that.

I have a frenchie and often find I have to wipe her bum. I think she doesn’t squat down enough so the angle is wrong for her. Especially if her poo is on the runny side! I just keep a packet of wipes handy by the back door and check each time she comes back inside!

Happens to my dog sometimes, just use wipes or if it a particularly runny episode a proper wash of the offending area straight away.

I have to do this with my crestie regularly. She's got long hair and the poo gets caught up in it. I put her in the bath and give her bum a shower. I don't find it offensive, no worse than changing a baby's nappy.

I am used to wiping bums it had just got really bad as I hadn't noticed it. Wipes now at the back door and his bum regularly wiped ! Just another bonus to having an old man Grin
