The doghouse

I know puppies aren't just for Christmas. I'm not daft.

But we thought we would get our puppy whilst we have 3 weeks off and DH starts shift work. Omg. We adore her. Minimal accidents. Friends with other dogs. Friendly with kids and adults. She is perfect 😍😍😍😍😍

I would happily get a puppy for Christmas- it's one of the longest holidays in our extremely quiet house.

If your house isn't quiet then no, terrible idea.

She's gorgeous. I have to say I hope you're prepared for the puppy biting weeding and pooing on everything stage though.

She's beautiful. My current dog and the one we have just sadly lost were both "Christmas" pups. Perfect time for us - just myself and DH in the household, time off work, nice and quiet. Have a wonderful Christmas!

My DDog of my childhood was sort of a Christmas pup - born on Christmas Eve so came a couple of months later. She was adored for 14 years, a good age for a lab.

OP Winter is absolutely gorgeous!

The whole "not just for Christmas" thing winds me up.

They're not just for April or July or October either. Anyone who is going to get a puppy on a whim is just as likely to do it any other time of the year.

The message should be "have you considered what having a pet means" rather than just not to give a pet for Christmas.

Puppy farming is the real problem, not people choosing Christmas to get a pet.

I've seen responsible owners get a dog all year round....and responsible breeders place puppies in homes just before xmas as well...
The breeder of my current girl did...and I'd been on the waiting list almost a year at the point and her orignial planned owner decided it wasnt a good time for them to take on a pup so I was delighted to get her even with minimal notice ...it does happen

...but theres a reason its been demonised.

Christmas puppies are linked with idiots and impulse buying for a reason..
I work as a vet. The January owners with their new xmas puppy often fill me with despair as so many of those animals are impulse buys or just poorly thought through ideas.....and are already beginning to lose their appeal at 10 to 12 weeks (second vaccine time)as the reality and expense of a dog kicks in...esp with the toilet training in the cold wet January.

Many are first time dog owners and underestimated the work of a puppy especially with kids in the house as well..

a massive amount will be rehomed around the 8/9month mark as they lose the cute puppy factor and start to hit the teen dog stage....and owners appear surprised that desexing hasn't miraculously changed the behavioiral issues that are occuring from lack of training and poor socialisation in the early days.....and of course the amount that come from puppy farms to start with is massive....
responsible breeders often wont sell a clueless person a puppy at xmas...because the responsible breeders will always have their puppys back and dont set them up in situations that are likely to need that...

Pupdate - Dd chose the name. We are hoping it will bring her confidence on a bit and get us all out as a family more.

It's already been working. Winter is doing so well. Toilet training is going great. She lets us know when she wants the back door opening. No poos in the house.

Extremely sociable on walks and loves the attention.

Goes in to her crate at night when she is ready for bed.

Seems to hold her bladder until I get up early in the morning.

Feel like I'm bragging now, but we are just all in love with her and she is amazing 😍
