Same breed?

We lost our gentle, calm first dog at the beginning of October at age 13 (above average for her breed). I'm still absolutely devastated but DH wants to get another dog. We got our DD from the breed rescue society and would like to adopt another rescue dog. DH wants to get the same breed, but I'm really uncomfortable with this as the particular breed are so identical. I don't think I could cope with it at the moment, but I need another dog to get me out of the house and exercise.

I'm also feeling right now that it's nice to be able to plan a few hours out without having to think about exercising a dog beforehand and then worrying about the number of hours they're left alone.

I don't know that I'm ready for the responsibility of another dog right now but I miss our DD so much. I work from home and the day is so long without them.

Has anyone else been through this? Did you get another dog (same breed?)? How long did it take?

Have you considered fostering for the breed rescue? It would give you a chance to dip your toes back into the water of dog ownership with no long term commitment - and I've never yet seen a rescue that isn't looking for more foster carers. It's also quite common for foster carers to adopt ("Foster fail") the odd dog that comes through their door.

I felt like you when we lost our beloved dog in Jan. we took 6 months out before getting another dog.
In that 6 months we enjoyed our freedom and thought long and hard about if we really did want another dog. We eventually decided we did and got our pup.

We decided not to get the same breed again. We loved our Dd so much and didn’t want the constant reminder of him. We also felt it was unfair to new dog as we would constantly be comparing him to Dd.

We've always had spaniels. Don't think I'd know what to do with a different breed. We have just got out first cocker though, was hoping calmer than a springer.. No luck there.
Each dog is different, I wouldn't worry about it being the same breed, you will love it and it's own personality in a few weeks.

I wait till I miss generally having a dog more than that dog before getting another one... it’s been various lengths of time depending on the dog and what else was going on tbh.

Breed has never been an issue before as they’ve been random crosses from rescues that just looked like themselves.

This time.., I don’t know, the breed definitely suits me, the breed rescue is near me... but the thought of having another dog that looks very much like him, but isn’t him is really upsetting.

I mean, it’s only been a week, so I might change my mind about breed, but at the moment it’s a definite no.

It’s a rottie I’ve lost, so I can’t even get a different colour or anything, lol

One thing to consider is that even dogs of the same breed can be vastly different characters; I had two (sadly now have the one) of the same breed and they are practically opposite in every way except for looks.

That said if the way another dog of the same breed as the one that you have lost will really upset you because of the reminders then perhaps explore totally different options when you feel ready for another dog.

Ours was a Weimaraner so not much chance of different colouring either.

We lost our gorgeous collie cross back in march and i am just about ready to start looking for another in the new year - i wouldnt have been able to replace him that soon.

sodthediettischristmas how about a long haired Weimaranar instead? So he/she looks slightly different but same breed characteristics?
