Food for a dog that’s been sick

My 6 month old miniature poodle has been sick about an hour ago.

He was running round like crazy playing and then suddenly threw up. He’s never done it before!

He’s been a bit quiet since but then he’s probably hungry. He was fed some kibble this morning. Then had a tiny bit of scrambled egg. He usually has had more kibble by now. He keeps looking/asking for food.

And he’s tired (usually has a sleep around this time but people keep coming to the door and so he’s not settled yet).

Do I just feed him as normal after he’s had a sleep or should I feed him something else?

I’ve googled what to feed a dog after being sick but there doesn’t seem to be a consensus.

Lots say chicken but then others say this can disagree with certain dogs.

I read boiled potato or plain boiled white rice. Does that sound ok?

Any other suggestions?

Im hoping it’s just because he was racing about. Or that it’s just that he ate something (like puppies do) that he shouldn’t have and now it’s out.

Can dogs just be randomly sick just once and then he fine?

I have a sickness phobia so a bit panicked. (Can you tell?!)

Also any advice on how best to protect your carpet/furniture with a sick dog?

I've always gone for a little dry toast and/or scrambled egg. The next day I feed a little 'Lilys Kitchen Recovery Recipe' which I found is REALLY good.

Some dogs can just vomit for what seems like no real reason and then seem fine.

Guessing you’ve fed yours now but just to say we always give some cooked chicken breast and plain boiled rice. He loves it, loves it so much I’m convinced he gets sick on purpose!

Just like pp said, plain food.
Treat puppy like you would treat a sick child, rice, bread, chicken etc..
only difference I make is very runny scrambled egg.

Hope all is well soon

Normal food is what gets the gut back to normal the fastest. Studies have shown that bland food leads to a longer total recovery time in dogs.

Fast him til this afternoon. I always boil up some chicken breast and rice for the first couple of meals after a vom. It looks and smells grim but it is gentle on the tum.

I have a mini poodle
Their stomachs are pathetic. Mine vomits or gets the runs if she eats anything out of her norm but she is a terrible scavenger
I give her plain rice until it settles down

Normal food. Offer at the normal time as well, he won't eat it if he's sick.

My dog was sick for about four days once (the vet thought he had eaten something on his walkies, that he shouldn't of)

I had to get this tinned food off the vets, it was a really plain food, just full of nutrients. After he had finished his tins, I moved him onto plain rice and plain chicken..and had to just get him to drink as much water as possible.

We just offer normal food or plain chicken. When mine was last sick (after eating something he shouldn't) he got plain chicken at his regular meal time. He kept that down so got his regular meal the following day and was fine after that.

I believe current advice is to give them 12 hours with just water to give the stomach a chance to settle, then feed normal meals.

When my dog is ill (from either end) we feed him his normal food but small portions at frequent intervals. Therefore, if let's say he normally has 500g of wet I would feed him 50g every hour for 10 hours. Then the next day 100g every 2 hours etc.

We have found in the past feeding rice, chicken, scrambled eggs etc doesn't help but tiny portions of normal food does.

Fast for a few hours at least. You can't do any harm as long as dog is drinking normally. If it's a one off from just over excitement give small amount of normal kibble a few hours later.

Thank you for all the replies.
He hasn’t done it again thank goodness (I HATE sick!).

I ended up not feeding for a few hours but he was clearly feeling hungry!

Then gave him small amounts of his normal food.

I hope my mini poodle isn’t prone to a dicky tummy. I’m a paranoid mess when that happens!

Lonecat. That’s interesting thanks. It felt odd thinking I’d be feeding him food he isn’t used to when his tummy is off so can see why it makes sense.

A nurse once said to me (when my child was ill) that it was fine to give her anything she felt like eating. If the bug is still there then any food I gave her would be back up anyway).

I feel for you. I also have sick phobia. But it seems to be just for humans. If my dog is sick I’m okay. But I don’t give her food for a few hours to make sure and then just a little to see.

Boiled chicken and rice is the advice from the vets here.

My pooch has a sensitive tummy and follows a sensitive dry food and boiled chicken diet.

Hope it’s nothing❤️
