Preparing for Dog Visitor

I'm having a visitor today who will be bringing a female dog. I have a two year old neutered male terrier.

When he was a smaller dog other dogs came to visit and play with him and he was fine and enjoyed running around in the garden with them. I realise that now he is older, introducing another dog into the home may be more problematic.

He is generally friendly with other dogs, if occasionally a bit too persistent. He is occasionally a bit guardy with toys. He is generally lively.

I think it's great for him to have another dog to come and play, but realise he may not feel so positive about having another dog invade his home! I just wondered if anyone had any advice on making the introduction go well.

Thank you

Introduce them on neutral territory - outside on the pavement a few yards from the house will be fine. Once they've 'made friends' you should be fine to bring them in together.

Oh, and put all his toys away before they arrive!

If the dog is happy to greet other dogs when on walks then taking him outside on a lead is ideal. My terrier is quite unfriendly to other dogs so it would not work for me. I think that both dogs should be on leads when they first meet. Have treats ready for both dogs to distract them.

YY to the above. If he tends to guard his toys, I'd remove toys and anything else he may consider especially valuable, such as his bed (I'm assuming they'll only be there for a few hours.

Thanks everyone, it all went quite well really once they got used to each other.
