The doghouse

Does anyone elses's dog "snuffle?"

When our dog wants something, she makes a snuffling noise, like sneezing. So if she wants to go out, we get a snuffle, and it gets louder until she gets what ever it is she's after.

It makes us laugh but we've never heard any other dogs do this, they bark instead.

Does anyone's dog make this noise too?

Not snuffles, but I think its the same logic. He gets in trouble for barking/whining so we end up with elaborate loud yawns and sighs when he wants food/walk etc.

Mine grumbles. She genuinely sounds like a grumpy old lady. It's very funny.

Mine 'huffs' if he doesn't get his own way.

He breathes deeply under any door if he wants to go into the room and it's closed.

He flaps his ears at night to wake us and let us know he is up.

BiteyDog has a whole vocabulary of noises to tell us how he feels Grin

Mine does a little fake sneeze and stamps his foot at the same time.

Then a stress induced scratch.

Then a little 'mmmuffff' and a nudge of my leg.

Last resort is a squeak and yawn at the same time.

Mine is a staffy. Staffys make strange grunty-snorty noises like pigs. Mine does it when she is trying to tell me something or is pleased to see me. Previous dog (large collie-cross from Greece) would make tiny noises (with mouth shut), audible if you had your ear near her head when she was either in pain or feeling a rush of loving emotion.

Resident Collie will happily shove an empty bowl loudly around the room to draw my attention to the fact that it is empty and needs filling. Now. Right this minute. I don't care that I've just been fed. You do know the bowl is empty and you can't leave an empty bowl?

No, but my aging lab is making so many noises now that he has only just started. On one hand I think it’s cute, on the other it’s getting loud enough to compete with the telly!

Mine makes grunty sort of noises when she doing her sniff inspection of the garden sometimes.

She also grumbles when she's been told she barked enough. She's allowed to have a bit of a bark when she first goes into the garden if there's noises outside that she feels she need to comment on. When she's told 'that's enough' she'll grumble and mumble for a bit as if she's determined to have the last word.

Unfortunately, she'll often start barking again though; not sure she understand when enough is enough.

Your replies have really made me laugh. It's funny how they all have their own little ways but ours does the grumbling as well, and always has to have the last word!

Biteyshark - I'd love to see your dog flapping his ears!

Ours sneezes when she's happy. It's adorable.

Cannothtinkofaname he has long spaniel ears so he knows if he shakes his head in the right way they flap and make the loudest ever noise at night Angry. I know he's doing it to wake us up because he never does it if one of us is in the spare bedroom with him which he is allowed to sleep on. He only ever does it early hours when we are in bed and he has got out of his dog bed and wants us to wake up and stroke him.

I have come to the conclusion that dogs aren't daft and know exactly how to 'train us' Grin

Ours sighs dramatically when we interrupt her hectic nap schedule with our existence. Hmm

No, but he sighs if we dare interrupt him! Or when he gets up in the night and moves around to settle/get comfortable, he flops down heavily and makes a kind of "harrumph" noise!

Ooh forgot this one.

If we're sitting on the sofa together, well, she'll be lying, and I've been rubbing her chest/tummy/head/back and I stop before she wants me to she'll bang one of her forelegs on the seat and give me a hard stare.

Clearly I'm the world's worst dog owner.

Oh yes, we get the hard stare - we call her the devil dog when she's doing it!

If she doesn't get a treat when she thinks she deserves one, or we don't go to bed when she thinks it's time.

I think I can see who is boss in our house!

Also get the hard stare if I dare to sneeze.

Eric's a whiner, he whines, yips and snorts and expects us to know exactly what he means. Bella growls, she's like a grumpy old woman, she also huffs if she thinks I'm taking her out but only go to the bin and she sighs if I dare to make any noise that disturbs her sleeping. Oh and both of them give me the look if I sneeze as well.

Bluepuppy does everything with ‘the look’. It is extremely subtle though so has taken me a while to get attuned to it.
