JRT still panting and terrified an hour after fireworks have stopped

She's 11. Never been scared before. Was terrified and panting all night. I put music on, swaddled her, am cuddling her. They stopped an hour ago and she is still panting and vibrating like a leaf. Her heart is going ten to the dozen.

Do I need to take her to the vet??? X

She's calmed down now her breathing has slowed and she's eaten some meat

My old boy is like this. He was fine with fireworks until he turned 10 and now he’s an absolute wreck! We have the curtains shut and telly REALLY loud. He has a bandana sprayed with Adaptil and I adapted some ear defenders. This year I’ve been dosing him with natural sedatives in advance and Im hoping that, plus him being a bit more deaf now, may help. I would go with a strong sedative if it was just one night but they’ll be going off most days for at least a fortnight. I bloody hate fireworks!!

She stopped panting for a while but they've started up again and she is panting now every breath.

I have 5mg Valium tabs could I give her a 1/4 of one? Any vets on here? Just googling dogs and benzodiazepines I honestly think she may have a heart attack's :(

She's completely fine now. Didn't give her anything and she is asleep. Dreading next two days

Vet nurse here! How is she now? Wouldn't give her a valium but she could have diazepam. Is your usual vet open on saturdays? They could prescribe you some tomorrow for the rest of the nights. A supplement called Yucalm is great but it takes a week of use to really start taking the desired effect.

Other things to try tonight

Make her a den maybe put a blanket over the back of the sofa so she has a dark cave area to go into.


Feed early in the light

Before she gets too stressed can you play games etc to side track her - this may be too much for her.

Do stay happy and normal BUT it is totally ok to reassure her and cuddle her - that will NOT re-enforce the fear.

DO not force her to do anything she does not want to - if she wants to lie on her own then let her do this.

Classic fm have a special radio program on tonight playing music to calm dogs for firework - worth a try!

We have the Adaptil express tablets which seem to work really well.

She's so upset again, the fireworks aren't even close. I took them for a mega long walk this afternoon to tire her out.

Someone said on Facebook earlier that calm from YOU and not too much fuss helps.
I know that’s hard and you must be so upset.
Don’t fuss too much but yes, music up, sing along, curtains shut etc
