To put our poor old boy to sleep. I can’t stop crying. Hardest phonecall I have ever had to make.
DH took the day off to be with him and spent most of the day crying as well.
We have spent all day doing “lasts” - last dinner, last evening walk/hobble, last denta-stick before bed, last time falling asleep in front of the fire. My heart is breaking every time.
The DCs don’t know. They know he has been really poorly and will not be with us much longer so they have been spending the last few days getting lots of cuddles with him and feeding him treats at every opportunity. We decided not to tell them because we thought it would be better for them not to be here when it happens, but there is no way I could have sent them to school knowing that he wouldn’t be here anymore when they got home. I have no idea if we made the right call despite agonising over it for the past few days.
He is finally asleep now so I will try and have a few hours in a bit before he wakes in the early hours and starts crying for some company. DH and I have been doing shifts with him but will probably both get up with him this time so we can spend his last few hours together.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. It was us two years ago and we still miss our boy. The only comfort I can give is that you're doing the right thing, super hard, miserable but it is the right thing.

And at least your dog knows they're super loved.

Will be thinking of you and your family tomorrow xxxxx

I didn’t want to read and run. Im so sorry.

The vet said to me a few weeks ago in a similar situation - you have given him a wonderful life full of love and happiness and you are giving him the last gift that you can. It made me cry (even more). But it’s true.

He doesn’t know. All that he knows is love and your company. Thinking of you x

We recently lost ddog and had to make this decision. It is one of the hardest things we have ever done. The only way we consoled ourselves was that we always did right by her. She was a difficult one as she was rescued and had many issues, but we changed our lives totally to give her the best life. She was loved, secure, happy and cared for every minute. Her life with us was the best of her whole life and we couldn't have done more.

It sounds like that is exactly the case with your dog. All they want is to be loved and part of the family, which your ddog clearly is. The decision is painful, but letting them suffer on because you can't let go is cruel. You are doing the right thing and that will help in time.

Thinking of you today. Flowers

We made the same decision for our dog and we did it out of love. He used to love us and he thought he was looking after us by protecting us from the hoover and other scary things so we had to do this so he didn’t suffer.
When ‘it’ actually happened was ok, he didn’t even realise and he definitely didn’t suffer at all, not for a minute I promise. I know we made the right choice.

My love and prayers are with you and your family this morning. I had to take my cat to the vets for the last time last week and it's heartbreaking. It's a huge burden to bear knowing you're making that call to end their suffering but have faith in your decision and know that he will no longer be in pain or lonely ever again Flowers

Just make sure ddog is lying down if you can. I won't go into why as it won't help you, but it will make it much easier for you.

We had to do this a few months ago so hugs to you and your family. It helped a lot having the vet come to the house, and it was very peaceful. We cried and we miss her but it was the right thing to do. We went on her favourite after to cry and talk about her.

On my love thinking of you today. It's so bloody hard isn't it. We have lost 2 much loved cats this year - it's been heart breaking. Our dog was 10 in August and he is as loved as any dog could be I can't bear that he's getting older and slower.

They are completely part of our families. But you have given him years of love and now we have to be really brave and help them on their wsy. It's that last act of kindness. Sending you love and strength today. Give him a big kiss and thank him for being such a gift.

It will get better I promise and you will remember him with a smile. Xxxx

This is the worst part of owning a dog, but it’s the right thing to do. You’ve given them an amazing life and they’ll end it surrounded by love ♥️
