Puppy pining

Just wondering if anyone could give me advice. Our puppy always whines and pines for us whilst we're out, even though MIL is there to play with him/let him out for toilet, he still pines for us. He whines so loudly when we put him in bed at night too when he didn't really used to. Does anyone know of anything I can do to help him settle down more and not pine for us so much?

Can you put something that smells of you in his bed/crate? Like an old t-shirt or something?

Fill a kong up with wet food/ soaked kibble and a couple treats with a lick of peanut butter, leave that with him and watch his delight licking and chewing it out, he will probably fall asleep after that effort! Once he’s used to doing it you can progress to freezing it to make it harder. The licking and chewing is very calming.

Thanks both of you, I put an old t shirt of mine in his bed last night and he went straight to sleep. Also picked up a plug in diffuser today so will see how that goes

How old is he and how long have you had him?
